Hello friends! Happy Friday! I am hoping you had a fantastic week and am wishing you a great weekend!
I have been ask a couple of times what I use for risers and where do I buy them? First, let me tell you what I mean when I say riser. Risers are items that we use to create our vignettes and turn them into beautiful masterpieces. They help our decor pieces become taller and highlight the ones we want. I use them all over the place to give my home’s decor some pizzazz!
Best place to shop would be your home. We can use all sorts of items in our homes. Today I will share with you what I use around my home for decor risers.
Let’s get started!
The most popular items I use would be my BOOKS!
You can create any height and give a pop of color in your home’s vignettes with books. If you have been following me, I have remove the jackets, make burlap book covers and have painted the jackets of books to fit my decor. If you missed my tutorial of how I made a burlap book cover you can go HERE.
Placing down one book would be a great foundation for a simple but cute vignette.
Stacking books to give your vignette some height.
I also like to turn the books to have the pages show instead of the binder to give it a vintage look.
PEDESTAL
Cake plates…..Why not use them? They are so cute…too cute to hide in your cabinets.
Wooden pedestals can bring nature to your vignette.
Cupcake pedestals… to highlight a smaller item in your vignette.
Urn…It can give your vignette a little character.
PLATES
Stacking several plates or just a few to create a pretty table buffet vignette. Adding items or placing them on a cake plate will give it more height to create a tier effect.
BOWLS
Like the stacking of plates, bowls can also be used as risers. They can highlight number of items such as wicker balls, small plants or food!
Kitchen SCALE
I love my little scale. This is a cute little item to use as a riser. Not only is it cute but will create a visual interest to a vignette.
CANDLESTICK
You don’t have to place a candle on a candlestick. Using a candlestick as a riser is a creative way to bring height to your decor.
OTHER OBJECTS
I have even used small votive holders, plastic bowls and gift boxes. Using these items I make sure to hide the riser so it will be hidden. This gives my item a little more height to my piece.
As you can see you can use anything, be creative!
I can’t let a blog go by without doing a DIY for you, now can I?
I saw a little farmhouse pedestal tray that I love on Etsy. It would be a great riser piece.
This is very easy to make and cost around $8.00 and less than an hour to make. If you don’t want to make one you can buy one similar HERE on Etsy. (My inspirational piece)
Below are the items I used to make my little DIY riser.
- Wood piece – I purchased it at Wal-mart. It is actually a craft sign – HERE for $5.97 (I bought the white washed piece.
- 4 wooden decorative pieces – Also from Wal-mart HERE for $2.27 (has 8 pieces only need 4)
- E6000
- hot glue and glue sticks
- white chalk paint
- chalk brush
- 120 grit sandpaper
Remove the tag and twine from the wooden piece.
Put that to the side.
Grab your wooden cap assortments (I am using the 4 larger pieces) and your white chalk paint and brush.
Paint the pieces.
Once the chalk paint is dry, take the sand paper and distress the pieces.
Gluing the pieces to the wood piece.
I am using E6000 placing that all around the little cap piece.
Just to keep the pieces better in place while drying, I am adding just a dab of hot glue.
My gun is a mess, after this I will be cleaning my gun. Gosh!
Let dry….and that’s it!
So there you have it! You can make any shape or style you like and be able to give your decor piece some height when using this little gem.
I hope you found this blog helpful and that you are inspired to make your own little farmhouse tray riser. If you have any questions please let me know.
I would love to hear what type of risers you use in your home’s decor!

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
You always have great ideas for vignettes. The riser stool you made is very versatile…I love it…😍 Thanks for another DYI that is easy to follow…!!
That is very sweet of you Lucy! The tray riser is such a great piece. I have already used it several times. It is on my coffee table right now holding a lantern. I do love how it turned out. Thanks again for being kind!
