UPCYCLE WITH PAINT AND PATIENCE

Hey friends!  Y’all have seen my barrel vases before.  Today, I am taking one of the vases and giving it a new look.  I will be putting the other two up in the attic for safe keeping.

My plans are to turn the look into something less Tuscan.  Wish me luck!  For the very first time I posted a video tutorial of this transformation.  You can go to either my Facebook or Instagram stories to check that out.

My first thought was to paint this all white and add dashes of blue….well, you know me, right?  I really don’t decide what I am going to do until I have the paint brush in my hand.  This was not anything different.

I sanded down the whole vase with 120 grit sandpaper.  After sanding, I wiped it down with a damp cloth.

Giving it two coats of primer.  I made sure that I primed the inside of the tube as far as I could.

Gave it two coats of white.  I am using Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace.

It came to me…..I now know what I want to do with the barrel vase! I am going to add some buffalo check to the bottom. 🙂

A bloggers nightmare!!  I had two projects going at once when taking pictures of my transformation.  I always use a different memory card for each project that I am working on.   Long story short.  I took several pictures of both projects and then realized I didn’t have a memory card in my camera and for some reason I can’t find the photos on my camera (or I don’t know who to retrieve them).  So I am missing the steps of making the squares and taping up my squares. 🙁

The diagonal strips are 2 inches wide.  I made a 2 inch square all the way down the diagonal on each strip.  I will be using three colors.  Navy, blue and white.  Each row will have two colors alternating.  One row with navy and blue and the next white and blue.   I taped off all the squares that I marked navy and white, leaving the blue exposed.   There is a twisted trim going down to make the strips.  I left the top one exposed and covered the bottom of it.  Thought that might camouflage the look of it.

As you know when I use painters tape for a design purpose I like to give it a light coat of the base color to help with paint bleed.  I gave it one coat of the white paint.

While that was drying I mixed up some blue paint.  I found dark blue latex paint on the OOPS shelf at Lowe’s for $3.  I mixed 1/2 cup of the blue and 1/4 cup of the white to make a light blue.

I used a foam roller and painted the area with the blue.  Took my paint brush to get the paint into the crevices.

While the paint was wet I removed the tape.

Let that dry well.  I was going to tape over the white and blue to paint the navy the same way, but that was too time consuming.  I just free handed the navy squares.  To make the navy I used 1/2 cup of the OOPS paint and a couple drops of black paint.

It’s starting to look G-O-O-D!

I painted the mid section two coats of the blue.

I wasn’t for sure what color to use as a pop of color for the little line above the blue.  I thought about a deep yellow.  I painted it yellow at first, but it was too bright.

So I grabbed some pumpkin chalk paint.  I will have to seal the paint since it isn’t latex.

It has a design at the very top.  I took the navy and a thin brush and painted the scrolls.

For the dotted borders I used the pumpkin chalk paint.  I decided after the fact to added an orange dot in between the scroll instead of a navy one.

What do you think?

I am placing it on the hearth of the fireplace.  I LOVE IT!  It was so worth the time and patience to paint this.

  1. Can’t connect with you thru Facebook. I love following the step by step process of the vase. I dont use the other connections that were offered so hope the Facebook will be fixed. This connection is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
