It’s time for the Creative Craft blog hop!! Sara, Birdz of a Feather is our host and does a great job rounding up some awesome crafters each month. I will share each creator’s craft at the bottom of my page.
Did you know you can paint just about anything? Well, maybe not everything, but you can change the color of your picture frame mats with paint. I have two mats with a green tone, let me show you how to do it.
So, here are the steps I took to revamp the unwanted color mats to a color that fits our home’s decor.
First Step: Remove the mat from the frame.
Step Two: Pick out the color paint you want your mat to be. The paint I am using is a latex paint.
Step Three: Trim out the edges first.
Next, with the chip brush, paint the entire mat.
Let the mat dry flat between coats.
That’s it! Such an easy change.
Place the mat back in the frame.

Terrie, paint is like waving a magic wand. Love the idea of painting mats or frames. It can definitely change a painting and the style.
Yes, this! Your wall art turned out perfectly ~ they look professionally framed! Many moons ago, I had to paint my own mats to compliment my cross stitch projects since I framed them myself. You sure saved lots of money with your DIY.
You did a wonderful job on the pictures !
Thanks Nancy. I am so happy with how it turned out.
Oh Terrie- great minds think alike. I just did this with a stained mat on a needlework picture I found at a yard sale last year. I used spray paint and I’m not sure if I have the exact ‘look’ I want, but it’s a huge improvement at a much better price than replacing it!
I was thinking spray paint but didn’t have the color I needed. Glad to know spray paint will work as well. Love crafting with you Ann.
This technique is certainly a quick and easy way to switch up and match your decor! You think of everything when it comes to designing! What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
It was so easy to do and budget friendly. Thanks Gail for coming by, it’s always a pleasure hopping with you.
I must say Terrie, my husband would tell people that I would paint anything that was standing still, but wow, I never thought about painting a picture mat a different color! Very brilliant and so much easier and cheaper than replacing the mat!!
My hubby says I go to bed with my paint brush. ha! I love giving a fresh coat of paint to just about everything I can.
Terrie, you are preaching to the choir, lol. I DO paint just about anything including countertops, flooring, a sofa, and my oven. 😉 I love your painted mats and beautiful art–great tip! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
Power of paint Cecilia, that’s what I always say. If you can’t paint it you don’t need it. ha!
Awesome idea and execution Terrie; they look amazing now. I have some ugly dusty rose mats from the 80s’s that desperately need this fix so thanks for the inspiration. I’ll try this for sure.
I was thinking about taking them to get new mats cut, but the cost of the custom mats were outrageous. I thought what would it hurt? I can’t use them as is so let’s paint them. Works like a charm and you can make them the perfect color of your choice. Glad I gave you an idea to fix yours.
