3 BASIC TIPS FOR DECORATING A DOUBLE TIER TRAY

Hey there!

How did you like the DIY Dollar Tree tier tray?  I already have mine decorated and place in my foyer (hint it is the tray #2 below).  If you missed that tutorial you can see how I made mine HERE and then come back here to learn how to style it with me!

If you were to ask me what item in my home I have trouble styling, it would be my double tier trays.  I really don’t know why they are such a challenge to me.  They are so versatile and can be used anywhere in the home, from the kitchen, on a coffee table, dining table, bathroom and even on a porch.   With all these possibilities why in the world would this intimidate me so much?

I researched what technique people take when decorating their tier trays.  I thought I would share with you what tips I found.

Tips on how and what to gather when decorating your tier tray.

  • Pick a theme to decorate your tray with.
  • Know the size of the items you will need for your tray.  Measure the height and width of the tray.
  • Collect different sizes and shapes.  The thinner and taller are better.  It keeps the eye moving.  Use risers to make an item taller.
  • Bring in nature with wood, greenery or flowers.
  • Add a statement piece or two.
  • Decorate in odd numbers.

Now that we have gathered all of our decorative pieces we are ready to style our tier trays.

Below are 3 basic tips on how to style a tier tray.  It doesn’t matter how many tiers you have, you will use the same steps.

3 Basic Tips:

  1.  Main pieces – normally are the larger pieces.
  2. Character pieces – the theme of the tray.
  3. Fillers – to fill in the gaps of the tray.

Let’s get started!

  • Take two of your main pieces and place them on your tray.  Try to keep the trays balanced and not too heavy on one side.

The first tray – the theme for this tray will be My Flower Garden.

Floral boutiques will be the main item.

Here is my DIY Dollar Tree tier tray.

The theme for this tray will be a Rustic Welcome.

I am using a glass star candle holder for a riser to give the bottom jar a little more height.

The theme for the next tray will be a Frog’s Pad.

Instead of one large piece for the bottom tray I am using two smaller items and a riser.

This is an example of an unbalanced tray.  Doesn’t it look like it is going to tip over?

  • Adding some character to your tray.

Back to the first tray:  Adding some terracotta pots, a little metal pergola and a colorful watering can.

Second tray:  Adding a grapevine wreath and wooden sign.

Third tray:  Added greenery.

Fill in the spaces with fillers.

This can be with greenery or smaller items.  Make sure you don’t get carried away with the smaller items. You do not want it too look too crowded or messy.

Back to the first tray:  To finish this tray up I used a little more greenery and flowers.  I ended up placing one of the bottom pots on a riser to make it a little higher.

  • Added greenery and three wicker decor balls to finish my DIY tray.

For the back of the second tray:  I made a little twine ball to add to the back of the tray.

If your tray will be placed where all sides will be visual, you will want to decorate the back also.

The third tray:  I added some small figurines and placed lavender inside the pitcher.

Using these 3 basic step was so helpful and made decorating my tier tray fun.  Now that I have mastered decorating these trays there’s no stopping me.  Now, when I go shopping I look for things I can use for my trays.   I hope these basic tips help you in styling your tier tray.  I am excited to decorate these two trays for all the seasons.

One more thing, when displaying your tier tray always decorate around your tray.  Make a vignette with it.
