BOOK PUMPKIN TUTORIAL

I left the bathroom and back at the Fall décor.  If you want to view all my Fall DIYs you can go here ⇒ 2019 FALL.  This evening I am joining in with a group of talented friends on Instagram doing a Pumpkin Mania Tour.  This is where we each share some inspirational pumpkin decorations.  Last year, if you remember I joined in one of the same type of tour.  I created the two paper mache pumpkins..  If you missed that DIY you can check that out here ⇒ The Great Pumpkin Challenge Tour.

This year I am making book pumpkins.  Here is my tutorial on how I made pumpkins out of books.

Here are the items I am using to make my pumpkins.

  • 3 books
  • craft knife or box cutter or scissors
  • orange paint
  • braided purse handles
  • wired jute rope
  • raffia
  • faux green maple leaves
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

Taking my book and my craft knife cutting the cover off the binder.  If you use soft back books you can just rip off the cover.

I made a little pumpkin pattern to trace onto my book.  I free-handed half a circle and cut it out.

I traced the pattern out on the book.

I started out using my craft knife but ended up using my scissors to cut the pages out.  I cut about 10 pages at a time.

Taking my Waverly Pumpkin craft paint I painted the edges of the pages.

Once that dried I pulled apart the pages.  The dried paint cause the pages to stick together.

I took my hot glue gun and added glue to the binder of the book.  Folded the binder of the book together and held it until the glue cooled.

Stood the pumpkin up and fanned out the pages.  Glue the first and last page of your book together to form a circle.

I wanted my pumpkin a deeper orange so I took the pumpkins outside and gave them a coat of orange spray paint.

Now it is time to decorate my pumpkins.

Taking the purse handles and cutting them in half and removing the wooden ring.

I hot glued the piece to the top of my pumpkin for the stem.

Taking the faux maple leaves and hot glued them to the pumpkins.

Taking the wire jute rope and curled it around a pen making a little curly twig.  I hot glued it to the top of the pumpkin.

The last step is taking some raffia, making a knot in the center of several strands I hot glued it to the pumpkin.

That’s it.  Now to style them.

  1. I love these! I have made about fifteen of them! However, the ones that I’ve made previous years do not keep their shape and have that full rounded pumpkin shape to them when taken out from the flattened stored crate. Do you have a secret to storing them and giving them life again after flat storing. It seems a waste of space to keep them in their full opened pumpkin decor. Any suggestions?

    1. I wish I had a suggestion for storing them. I keep mine in a closet and not in a tub because of just that, it tends to be smashed if I stored in a tub or box.

  2. Thanks girlfriend for this inspiration. You’re amazing my DIY QUEEN. I love this and pinned. May not have time this year. Making next year for sure. I would love a small and medium one. The colors for the pages are endless.

    Love it.

    Enjoy your day

    1. I know you can do so much with these. I remember when I was a lot younger we use to fold catalogs to make Christmas trees. Do you remember those? This made me remember that. Have a great Thursday. Thanks for always coming by to visit. I love your visits Cindy!
