HOW TO MAKE CORDING ORNAMENTS

Learning how to make a Christmas Ball Ornament will be easy.  I am kicking off my Christmas in July 2025 today!  In this tutorial you only need a couple things to make the basic ornament, after that, you can customize your ornament with pretty embellishments.

Supplies and tools you will need.

  • Cotton Craft Cord (I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby)
  • ClearGel Tacky Glue or Hot Glue.  (I used Tacky for storing purposes)
  • Ornaments New or Old (I purchased a big package of plastic clear ornaments)
  • Scissors
  • Paint (I used spray paint for the caps and craft paint for the ornaments)

The cording Christmas Ball Ornament is worked in a continuous round movement around the ornament and finished with adding back the wire cap. It’s a very easy technique once you get the hang of it.  Let me show you how I made mine below.

Step One – Spray paint the ornaments cap.

I sprayed the top ornament cap with a Hammer gold spray paint.

Spraying the metal top definitely makes a big improvement to the finished ornament!

Step Two – Wrapping the cording around the ornament.

One ornament took me less than 30 minutes to wrap.  I was extra careful making sure I got the close to each other.

  • Snip the end of the cording.

  • Add a stream of glue around the top of the ornament right under the lip, making sure you do not add glue or cording to the part where the cap will be.
  • Keep glueing and wrapping around the ornament making sure to keep the rows close together.

  • Reaching the very bottom.  Add some glue, cut the string and continue to wrap and tuck the end in.

  • I used a pen to help tuck the end.

  • Let dry completely before the next step.

Step Three – Add ornament cap back onto the ornament.

The aluminum silver caps to me would look cheap hanging on the tree, this may not matter as much because the eye is naturally directed to the shape or color of the ornament. But having all your ornament caps the same color is important for achieving a cohesive and visually stunning display.

This is a great way to save money when you want to add a new color or change your color scheme.  I like to create new ornaments from old ornaments that are scratched or the wrong color.  I hope you try to create some new ornaments for your Christmas decorating this coming season.

I also shared another simple Christmas ornament tutorial on my Facebook page.

I decided my colors I will be using for 2025 Christmas decorating.

I am pretty pumped about the color combination this year.  I was drawn to the box of ornaments I purchased last year.  It still catches my eye, maroon, dark navy (my cracked pepper), green, and golds.
