I am sharing such a simple DIY for the bathroom! Go look at your scrap lumber or buy a 1 x 6, maybe you can follow along and make a bath board with me.
You will need a 1 x 6 board; length will determine how wide your bathtub is. I cut mine to 26″ and 2 pieces of the same board that’s only 1 ½ inches wide.
It’s time for another fun creative craft hop. I want to mention Sara Birdz of a Feather and Donna Modern on Monticello they both are the master minds for the monthly blog hop, they both do a fantastic job gathering up talented crafters to provide you inspiration. This month we only have 7 crafters sharing cute crafts with you, at the bottom of my page, I will share each participant’s link to their craft.
I promise this will be a simple project, the hardest part of this was which stain I wanted to use. Let’s get started on my creative craft.
How To Make a Simple Bath Board
Step One: Measure your bathtub
Measure the overall width of your tub.
Step Two: Cut your board
Since this is such a simple tray, the wood itself is really the star of the show. Consider which pieces of the board you want to include in your tray before cutting.
Cut your wood to match the overall external width of your tub. You can cut it to be slightly smaller if you want to ensure the bath tray doesn’t extend past the edge of the tub.
For me, my overall width was 28 inches. I cut my board at 26 inches, which should put the board in the center of each edge.
With the leftover board, cut two pieces to approximately 1 ½ inch wide. These two pieces will be the cleats for the bottom of the tray to stop the board from falling off the edges.
Step Three: Distress the board *optional*
This is the time when you can take out your frustration by beating up the board with a hammer, chisel, saw whatever you want to distress the wood.
For me, I took several different saws, chisel, hammer and wire brush to give a jagged edge to my board.
Step Four: Sanding
Sand your entire board with 120 grit sandpaper and then a second time with 220 grit sandpaper so that it’s nice and smooth. Sand the two smaller pieces as well.
Step Five: Add the cleats
To add the cleats, place your board back on the tub and mark where the inside edge on the board to each side. Then add wood glue and place where marked.
I added something heavy to each end where the cleats are until the glue dried.
Once the glue had time to set, I added two wood screws to each cleat. Drilling pilot holes first.
Step Six: Stain and seal your board
The stain I chose Minwax Special Walnut because I love the warm color it gives to raw wood.
I applied my stain with a soft cloth.
I applied three coats of Minwax Paste Finishing Wax, following the instructions on the can. I lightly sanded with 220-grit sandpaper between each coat.
There you have it! Now you know how to build the easiest DIY bath board!
