If you have been following my blog, you know that the first Wednesday of the month I host a DIY Challenge. I gathered a group of bloggers who loves creating budget friendly home décor too. 🙂 For July’s challenge, we are doing a summer DIY. You can find links to each of their blogs at the end of my page.

My DIY is a simple do it yourself type of project. I am sharing how you can make a WELCOME sign to sit on your porch or really anywhere you would like. Our front porch is more of a stoop than a porch. I measured the area next to our door and found a piece of wood that would fit nicely. Instead of using stencils or a cricut I went to Dollar General and purchased six 4″ wooden letters. I purchased the letters; W-E-L-C-M-E. For the O; I am going to make little ornaments to change as the season does.
First thing I did was paint my board. I am using the same color as our front door. To take a look at our front door project click here → FRONT DOOR REFRESH.
Now to the letters. I couldn’t find a W so I purchased another letter M and turned it upside down. I painted two coats of black paint to all of my letters.
Like I said earlier, for the O I am going to make seasonal ornaments to hang in it’s place. For summer, I picture watermelons. I took some underlayment I had left over from my paper organizer project. You can find wooden cut outs most anywhere, even Dollar Tree has Crafter’s Square wooden cut outs. I made mine since I had all the extra wood, I made a 4″ square to keep the size even with the letters. I made a half circle, the shape of a piece of watermelon. I wanted the look of a watermelon with a bite mark. I took the drill and drilled a couple holes to resemble a bite mark. I drilled two holes, one on each top side to place a wire to hang my piece. Sanded my piece well.
I painted my piece in green, white and a dark pink and made some watermelon seeds as well.
I took a piece of wire from Dollar Tree, threaded it through the drilled holes, curled the ends to make a hanger. I took some cute ribbon and made a messy bow to attach to the hanger.
As you can see the watermelon with the hanger turned out the same size as the letters.
While I had the underlayment out I cut a pumpkin shape.
I will have fun making more for the other seasons. With the pumpkin at least I am ready for fall.
My letters are all painted and my little ornaments are done, now it’s time to put it all on my painted board.
I added a picture hanger to the back of the board so I can place it on the brick with a brick hanger.
I placed a bow at the top of my board and measured out 1 inch space between each letter. To hook my wooden ornaments on the board I used a screw hook so the wire will stay securely on the board.
To attach my letters to the board I used Power Grab, applying it to the back of each letter and placing it on the board. The Power Grab will keep the letters on the board in any type of weather.
Since my board will be outside I gave it a coat of clear sealer.
I used a brick hanger and added the sign to the brick next to our front door. See how tight it is? The sign fits perfectly. Gives the small stoop some fun!
That’s it. I didn’t have to trace out the letters or make a stencil. How about those changeable ornaments? How fun are those? I have this cute little welcome sign for our front porch, all is left to do is make a wreath and a rug to place out there as well. Stay tune!!
