It’s the first Wednesday of the month, which means it’s time for the monthly DIY Challenge. For the theme this challenge I decided to let the bloggers decide what they want to share with us. It’s going to be fun taking a look at what type of DIY items they are all going to share, at the bottom of my page I will have all of my friend’s DIYs for you.

It’s almost time to start thinking about Fall, so I need to start planning on things I need to buy, make or revamp. Today I am going to share how I made an easy Farmhouse sign.

I am using scrap wood I had from my board and batten project in the foyer. You could use a 36″ x 15″ piece of light weight board.

Here are the items I am using:

5 strips of underlayment cut at 36″ x 3″
3 strips of underlayment cut at 15″ x 1.5 “
liquid nails
upholstery stapler
paint (Waverly Plaster and Elephant)
Wording of your choice (I used my Cricut to create my cut out words)
Waverly stencil (a border design)
worn out block sander or 220 grit sandpaper

Farmhouse Sign Tutorial

Step 1

Lay your five 3′ strips evenly together. I used my ruler on my work space to create an even edge.

To the front of my boards I measured 3″ from the edge, marked and drew a line. I did this to both sides.

To hold the planks together, I used three strips, two in front and one in the center back with Liquid Nails and staples.

Applied Liquid Nails to the planks.

Adding the planks to the inside of the marked line.

Let dry for several hours. Turn the board over and apply the last 15″ strip to the center of the board. Staple the plank on the back side of the board, one at each end and one in the center. My staples were not deeper than the two planks.

I placed books on top of each plank for several hours until the Liquid Naild had time to dry.

While the glue was drying I created the wording to apply to my sign. My saying; “begin each day with a grateful heart”.

Decorating The Sign

Once the glue had dried turn the sign over, (where the two planks are on top). I painted mine with Waverly chalk paint in the color Plaster, two coats.

After the paint dried I gave the entire board a light sanding. I gave my sign a boarder, I used a Waverly stencil and Waverly chalk paint in the color Elephant.

Placing the stencil on the edge of the board, applied the paint.

I connected each border with a smaller paint brush.

Gave it a light sanding with a worn out sanding block.

Positioned my working to the board.

Once I had the wording where I wanted I applied them to the board.

To seal everything, I gave it one coat of Poly.

Attached two saw tooth picture hooks to the back of the sign.

That’s it. How cute is this? I will be sharing where I place the sign when I start decorating our home for Fall!! For now, look how cute this is and don’t you just love the saying?
