After cleaning out my craft closet I grabbed a few things to make a cute craft.

After my craft, make sure you check out Tammy’s craft over at Patina and Paint.  I will have her link at the bottom of my page.

How to make a Patriot Sign

Items needed:

  • 16″ vertical wall decor sign
  • 3 star wooden cut outs
  • U S A mini wooden letters
  • red, white, blue and khaki craft paint
  • red, white, blue ribbons
  • wooden bead garland
  • craft wire
  • star stencil
  • embellishments (I used buttons)
  • Decorative tape, very thin

Prep sign:

Remove any embellishments or glitter from your sign, sand lightly and wipe the entire sign with a damp cloth.

Paint the center of the sign, about 3 inches wide with khaki craft paint.

My sign is 4 1/2 inches wide, I measured across 1 1/2 inches, marked twice.  I did this at the top, middle and bottom of my sign.  Drew a line down from mark to mark, making two vertical lines.  Add the washy tape next to the two lines.

Paint over the tape with more khaki paint to seal the edges of the tape.

After the khaki paint dries thoroughly, give the piece two coats of white paint to the entire board.

To prevent the tape from sticking, remove the tape before paint dries.

Paint the stars and letters.

Remove the letters U S A from the letter package.  I placed all three letters on painter’s tape to keep them from moving around while painting.

To the top 1/3 of the letters, I painted blue and the bottom 2/3 white.

I painted red stripes to the white portion of the letters.

With white paint I gave the blue portion some polka dots.

Let the letters dry thoroughly.  In the meantime, paint the three stars.

I painted one blue and two red.

I added white stars to the blue star, one of the red I added white polka dots and to the other stripes with blue polka dots in the center.

While the paint is drying, I grabbed the beads and wire and created a hanger for my sign.  Measured the wire the length I wanted and thread the beads onto the wire.  Leaving 1 inch of wire at both ends.

Turn the board over and staple the wire to each side of the board, curling back the wire over the staple.

Decorating the board

Wrap the top part with twine, I am using red and white twine.

With hot glue I placed the blue star at a tilt.

I glued the letters U S A in a straight line under the blue star.

The other two stars, I placed the red polka dot star in the opposite tilt and the striped star I added it straight.

Adding ribbon and buttons to my sign, a messy bow on the beaded handle and each star.

I have to say, I love how this sign turned out.  It can be used for all the Patriotic holidays!  I hope I gave you an idea for your red, white and blue celebrations.

Make sure you go over to see what craft Tammy will be sharing.
