Welcome back in the craft room, today’s DIY I am using a product that I have never used before Sculpey Air Dry Modeling Clay. I am going to add some DIY handles to a vase I found on the clearance shelf in Tj Maxx.

To start off the project, I measured and marked where I want 4 small handles to be on the vase. From the bottom of the lip, I measured 1/2 inch down, marked and again down at the 2-inch mark.
I ended up with 4 sets of two marks evenly spaced around the top of the vase.
To make the handles, I took a size of clay large enough to make 4 pieces.
I sealed the package up with duct tape to keep the clay from drying up.
Cutting the piece of clay into 4 equal parts.
Taking each piece rolling into a 3-inch tube shape.
With the rolled-up clay tube, I placed each end on the marks I made earlier on the vase. Pressing down on the clay to connect the handles with the vase. Smoothing out the clay evenly around the handles.
I did this step to all 4 of my rolled-up pieces.
Let the clay handles dry for 2 to 3 hours. Afterwards, I layered the vase with 4 different colors of paint. To get the same effect I did on my vase, you can use any shades of colors. I used a terracotta for the base, off white for the main color, black and brown for highlighting.
For the base, I used the terracotta paint adding baking soda to the paint to add texture.
Painted the entire vase with the terracotta.
On the vase it has markings of the brush strokes, I kept my brush marks the same direction.
To get up under the handles I used a smaller brush.
Once the terracotta paint was dried, I sponged painted a patchy layer of off-white paint.
Third layer I sponged pat a very light patchy layer of black paint.
Making random pats with the black.
The fourth layer, a small amount of dark brown paint. Just a couple pats here and there.
Last layer, back to the off-white, applied another patchy layer. This layer will set all the colors together.
Let it dry completely. Apply one layer of polyurethane.
Style with your favorite stems.
I love how this vase turned out. I hope you do as well. Layering paints can create the prettiest texture surface, in my opinion. Try it on one of your vases you have sitting around and turn a forgotten piece into one of your favorites.
