DIY LANTERN TO BRUSH YOU AWAY-PINTEREST CHALLENGE

Hey there!  It’s time for another Pinterest Inspiration Challenge hosted by Cindy over at County Road 409.  If you are coming over from her page, WELCOME!  Isn’t her home beautiful? She is so inspiring.  What do you think about her version of the lantern inspiration?  I just love how she styled her lantern.

For this challenge our group takes one inspirational photo and put our own spin on it.  We all have different styles from that one photo.  I just love taking an inspirational Pinterest pin and making it for myself and with this challenge we get a lot of takes on one Pinterest Pin.  If you are new here I have a page with all of my PINTEREST CHALLENGES listed out for you to view.  If you want to follow me and my pins on Pinterest just click → PINTEREST ACCOUNT and start following me. 🙂 I hope you enjoy today’s blog.  I will share all of my friend’s blog links at the end of my page.

The Pinterest inspiration challenge is a lantern vignette created by Kelly Nan over at Kelly Nan.   I love the view of her lantern vignette, don’t you?

When Cindy first shared the inspirational photo I had my lantern all picked out to use for the lantern inspiration.  BUT……then I thought, I am a DIYer I should make a lantern for this challenge !!  Do you remember (for those that have been with me in the beginning) my DIY lantern back in 2017, how time flies.  If you missed the tutorial you can check it out DIY LANTERN.  I used Dollar Tree picture frames for my first DIY lantern.  I didn’t want to use those again, so I went into Dollar Tree searching for items to use for a lantern.  I bet the workers that day had their eyes on me, I was going down every aisle with the eye of the tiger kind of look.  I found my items, paid for all of it and hurried home to start creating.

Here is what I found at Dollar Tree to make my lantern.

  • 6 wire brushes
  • 1 round framed mirror
  • 1 metal cake pan
  • 1 bag of white legos
  • 1 tall glass vase

Items I purchased at Hobby Lobby

  • 1 drape tieback
  • 1 package of tassel caps
  • 1 package of album rings (I just found out that Dollar Tree has notebook rings as well)

Items I had on hand

  • Rust-oleum white spray paint
  • 6 small wood screws
  • power grab adhesive
  • wood glue
  • wood filler
  • drill and drill bit
  • screw driver
  • needle nose pliers

Here is my tutorial on how I made a super cute lantern with most items from Dollar Tree.

I took the 6 wire brushes out of the packages and removed the wire bristles with pliers.

Wasn’t difficult to remove the bristles.  I pulled them out with my needle nose pliers.  I pulled up and twisted.

Have to share this,  I thought I was the first to use the Dollar Tree wire brush for a DIY home décor piece, but as I finished my DIY lantern and was writing my blog I received an update from Kelly Barlow’s creations.  She used the brush too and released it two days after I created my lantern!  First time she used them as well.  Great DIYers think a like!

I took wood filler and filled all the holes in.

I made sure all the holes were filled and smooth evenly with a putty knife.

The end of the handle has a hole to place a rope or something to hang the brush up (I guess).  I took 4 of the 6 and filled in the holes.   I will share later why I only kept two.

For the first step I am taking the cake pan, legos and the power grab.

I took 6 pieces of legos  (the thin strip with 4 bumps)

Gluing the pieces to the rim of the cake pan.  I spaced the pieces evenly around the pan cleaning off the glue.

Removing the mirror from the package, remove the back and the mirror from the frame.

I let the glue set over night.  The next day I took 220 grit sand paper and sanded the handles where I added the wood filler.  Making sure they are all smooth.

I sprayed the handles, pan and mirror frame white.

I brought all of the items indoors after spray painting because it was so hot outside.  Let them dry for several hours.

CREATING THE BASE OF THE LANTERN

I took a drill and drilled a hole above the legos in the cake pan.

TIP: Drill the holes before spray painting.

This part is optional:  Taking the mirror, power grab and the cake pan.  Attaching the mirror to the bottom of the cake pan making sure it is centered.  I thought placing the mirror would reflect the candle light.

ATTACHING THE HANDLES TO THE LANTERN BASE

I took wood glue, the two handles with the holes at the end, cake pan, 2 small wood screws and a screwdriver.

I added a small drop of wood glue to the end of the handle, making sure it was the side where the bristles once were.

Add the handle with the glue side placed on the drill hole.  I thread the screw inside of the pan into the wood handle. Do not tighten the screw.  Place the other handle across from the other.

Taking the other 4 handles and 4 small wood screws attaching them the same way.

ATTACHING THE TOP OF THE LANTERN

Taking the mirror frame and the power grab.

Adding a drop of power grab to the top of each handle.

Turn the mirror frame and cake pan with handles upside down placing the ends of the handles inside the frame.  The handles fit perfectly inside the mirror frame.

Now tighten up the screws.

Turn your lantern upright.  What do you think?

ADDING THE HANDLE TO THE LANTERN

I just couldn’t see myself spending what they wanted for a thick nautical rope.  I went over to the fabric department at Hobby Lobby and found a drapery tieback.  Perfect, they were 50% off!  I also purchased a package of tassel caps to add to the ends of the rope.  It was also 50% off as well.  To connect the rope to the handle I am using two 1 ½ inch album rings.

Taking the tieback and wrapping a piece of tape to the center, this will keep the rope from unraveling when cutting it in half.  Now I have enough rope for one more lantern. 🙂

I unraveled the decorative end.

Added the tassel caps to each end and tightening the screws to hold the rope secure.

Taking my album rings and placing them in the holes on each side of my lantern.  See it worked perfect having left the two holes unfilled.

Clip on the rope.

I purchased a Dollar Tree glass cylinder vase.

Placing it inside the lantern.

Here is my DIY lantern.  I think it is so cute.  I love the rope, only you and I know it is a tieback! 🙂

Since it is so close to July 4th I am styling my lantern first with red, white and blue decor.

Now, continuing with the Pinterest challenge and styling my lantern like Kelly’s lantern in the inspirational photo.

To make the moss around Kelly’s candle, I am going to make some greenery rocks out of 2 Dollar Tree items.

  • Reindeer moss
  • Moss rocks
  • hot glue
  • scissors

I took the stones added hot glue and applied the reindeer moss on the stones.  Cutting to make it all even.

Added a white candle and placed the stones around the glass vase.

Making this lantern was a lot of fun, from the beginning to the end.  Walking around looking for items to make the lantern to the one sitting in front of me.  I love being a DIYer!

Here is my version of the inspiration Pinterest pin.

To make this lantern it cost me under $12.  $o worth it.  I hope I inspired you to make a lantern like the one I shared today, put your OWN spin on it.  If you do PLEASE send me a picture of your creation!  I would love to see it.
