THRIFT STORE BOWL HIGH END HACK

Sharing another item I found the other day in Goodwill.  I love looking for inexpensive items to make something high end to place in our home.  I found a nice size bowl for under $3.00 I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

I purchased a vase in Kohl’s a couple months ago and love the texture and coloring of the vase.

Before I start giving my bowl a makeover, I took a look online for inspiration, I found a cute decorative bowl on Amazon.

The shape of my bowl was similar although it didn’t have the bottom part like the bowl on Amazon.  I looked into my craft stash to see if I had anything I could use to mimic the bottom.  I found a candle holder I purchased years ago in Dollar Tree.

Cleaning the bottom of my bowl and the bottom of my candle stand with alcohol, making sure it is clean from any dust and dirt.

I applied a good amount to each leg of the candlestand with E6000.

Placed it in the center of the bottom part of the bowl.  I added something heavy into the bowl to keep both parts together until the glue takes hold.

I let this sit for several hours.  Once the glue was dry, I gathered up my joint compound and brown craft paint.

Mixing the joint compound and paint together until smooth.

Again, here is the look I am trying to copy on my bowl.

Layer is the key to achieve the look.  Starting with the dark brown mixture spreading with a paint brush.

Painting it upside down first, turning it carefully over and painting the rest of the bowl, one coat of the joint compound mixture.

I also painted the inside of the bowl as well.  Let dry completely.

Once the joint compound is completely dry.  I used Even Better Beige from Behr with table salt and baking soda to make a textured mixture.

Adding baking soda and salt gives it a gritty texture which will help to achieve the look of my vase.

I applied the salt mixture in a patting sweep to the bowl, leaving some of the brown layer peeking out from underneath.

Continue to add the salt mixture to the bowl until the entire bowl has the look I wanted.

Another drying time.  This took a bit longer to dry.

I have used baking soda and paint before in other projects, but adding salt to the mixture was a great addition to get the gritty texture for the look I want.

Here is my thrift store bowl and inspirational vase.  I love how they look together.

I’m very pleased with how this simple process completely changed the look of the bowl. The texture, color and the shape of the bowl is perfect for decorating in our home.
