Hello! Right off the top…..what do you think? Do you remember the terrible looking stool I shared with you? If you hadn’t seen it, let me show you what this bench looked like when I purchased it. 😮

Yes…that is black duck tape and yes it sure looked ugly, the poor thing. You know what? It probably is the best thrift store purchase and makeover as of today that is my favorite, by far!
I want to share with you my makeover process for the stool. It did take a lot of elbow grease but hey…after we looked up stools like this they are well over $60.
Let’s get started!
I took the duck tape off the chair to find that the seat was broken in half.
I have no idea what was on the seat. It might of been a design of some sort. 🙂
The first thing I did was strip the top. I used Kwik-strip to strip the old paint by brushing it on with a chip brush. It worked great. It cut through the adhesive of the duck tape and all the layers of paint.
After it sat awhile I used a putty knife to remove the old paint.
Took the seat off the base. I added some wood glue and wood filler to the broken seat. I added some braces to the bottom of the stool for more support.
I started stripping the base of the stool. It had 4 different colors of paint it took me some time and a lot of sanding to get it down to the bare wood.
The last step I wiped it down with mineral spirits and sanded it down one last time.
Now to fix the little bar that was broken.
I used the drill and a large drill bit to form a new opening where the old peg broken off.
I had an old broom handle that was stripped where you screw it on the head of the broom. I keep everything. 🙂 The peg on the broom handle was too long so I cut that off and cut a piece to size.
I had to make a little peg at the cut end. I just chiseled it out with my utility putty knife. I cut around the peg with the saw just to help me chisel.
I am sure Jim had a tool for this instead of me hand chiseling but we were at our daughter’s and didn’t have anything. It really didn’t take me long at all.
Added some wood glue to each end and placed both into the drilled holes.
Added the seat back onto the base with wood glue as well. Here is how I stained the stool. I made my own little concoction. I painted General Finishes stain gel in Grey and then on top of that I added Minwax dark Walnut stain. Wiping it off with a clean cloth.
This is the color I got.
I did the same thing with the base.
Can you tell that this was a broom handle? It is just a little bit larger, but not noticeable.
I applied two coats of sealer on and let it dry.
We placed it next to the bathtub. Doesn’t it look great with the flooring?
Can you believe it is the same stool?
Added some little decor to the top.
