My blog post is going to give an old yard cement deer new life. If you have followed me since last Christmas, you would have noticed all the deer I used in our Christmas home. This year I haven’t used one deer. AS YET. Today, will be my first deer.
Before I brought the deer inside, I took a scrub brush and soapy water and gave the deer a good scrubbing. I also roughed it up with a wire brush to remove the loose paint.
I am using chalk paint, mixing two colors to make a pretty brown for his coat. Hazelnut and Truffle.
Gave the deer two coats of the mixed paint.
I painted with black chalk paint the eyes, nose and for shadowing the creases. I used butterscotch yellow for highlights; I dried brush the yellow all over. I am sealing with waterproof sealer.
I wanted my deer to have antlers. I remembered I had some antlers in my Christmas tubs. I pulled out two of the same antlers to add to my deer.
In order to use the antlers I have I need to customize them a little bit. I pulled out the stem and trimmed the flat part into a curve to fit properly on the deer.
I am gluing the antlers on with hot glue so I can easily remove them after Christmas.
Since they are the same antler, I turned one facing the opposite way. Would you have noticed that if I didn’t mention it?
Now he looks like a Christmas deer, right?
Now that he is ready to be decorated, I am making him a Christmas blanket, made out of greenery and picks. I am using the same type of items I used for my shelf garland.
Started with a small piece of garland.
I bent the garland to form over the back of the deer.
First pick was a heavy flocked stem.
Next two stems were a glitter type and a green type.
Adding some color to my blanket with berries, flocked twigs and glitter leaf stems.
I made my Easy Poinsettia Bow to wrap around his neck and added three small ornaments in the center.
Added flocked pinecones and battery-operated lights.
While I am showing part of my kitchen’s Christmas tree, let me show you the full corner.
To the window I added a frame and wooden beads. How simple can it get?
I used the same type of greenery, picks and berries on the tree as the deer’s blanket and the garland on the tray tower.
The color ornament combinations I used was white snowy, flat red, flat toast brown color and mercury glass ornaments.
I used the wicker tree color I purchased last year in Beall’s.
That’s it! Now to style my table and hutch, come back tomorrow!

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
Your gorgeous deer revamp turned out perfectly! I’m loving that pretty bow.
Thanks Allyson. With having thumb surgery, I can do this bow. ha! It’s a very pretty bow as well.
Great job on remaking the deer. It was cute before but now you have elevated it to a stylish grown up version. It looks great next to your tree.
Thanks Donna. I am sure the ears won’t last through the season since I only hot glued them on, but will be easier to remove after the season.
This is perfect! I love deer and the adornments were adorable. Also, definitely wouldn’t have noticed the antlers.
It took me a minute to figure out how I can make them work. It is a fun conversation piece I guess. 🙂 Thanks Rachel.
He looks so holiday festive now! Great upcycle/makeover Terrie! Your kitchen corner looks so pretty, love your tree and the “window!”
Hey Jenna, thank you so much. I am happy with how the deer looks, a fun piece to have outside and inside. 🙂
Thanks Jenna, I do love how cute he looks. It’s a fun piece to style inside and outside our home. 🙂
Your deer makeover turned out really cute, Terrie! But adding the antlers was the icing on the cake! He looks really spiffy and elegant decorated – and very impressive!
Awe, thanks Gail. It was a fun project. I am very happy with the look, even though he has a wonky antler. 🙂
Terrie, what a beautiful transformation, and yes, I am constantly bringing things from the outdoors to use as decor inside! You really did a lovely job! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction
Thank you Cecilia. Happy holidays to you and your family!
Wow, I’m just dazzled by your Christmas display Terrie and that’s just the kitchen! I’d never have noticed about the antlers if you didn’t mention it; they really set the tone. Beautiful work!
Well, thanks Sara. It will be a conversation piece come this holiday season I am sure. 🙂
Terrie your deer turned out so well, I love it. And adding the antlers was genius!!!!! Great job and I love it next to your tree. A revamp well done.
Your care so sweet Tammy thank you.
