While Kehlani and two of our nieces were visiting me, I wanted to find a cute craft to do with them. I found the cutest Christmas craft that would be perfect for the three girls to do.
All three of the girls sat around our kitchen table as I taped them creating their reindeer. To catch the video, you can check on my Facebook page or my YouTube channel. Today, here on the blog I am sharing the step-by-step tutorial on how I made my Christmas reindeer.
Supplies you will need:
- 2 x 4 board cut at 8 inches
- two eucalyptus leaves or a similar shape item
- 2 pine picks
- lid or button for the nose
- E6000 glue and hot glue
- craft paint (black, brown, khaki, red and white)
- black sharpie
- rope or twine
- embellishments of your choice
- paint brushes
- scissors and wire snips
- drill and drill bit
Step One
With your drill and drill bit, drill two holes in the center of one end of the 2×4.
Step Two
Paint the board and the two eucalyptus leaves with Nutmeg brown. Front, sides and back.
Dry brush Khaki craft paint to the board and leaves.
With the snips, cut off the stems, outline the leaves with the black sharpie.
Step Three
Add the pine stems to the drilled holes in the 2×4 with E6000.
Apply a couple drops of E6000 into each drilled hole, afterwards stick the wire of the pine pick into the glued drilled hole.
They resemble antlers, don’t you think?
Taking the two painted leaves.
- apply a drop of hot glue to the center of the rounded part of the leave
- pinch together
- add hot glue to the pinched area
Hot glue the ears in front of the antlers.
WOW! How adorable this is starting to be.
Step Four
To create the eyes, I use black craft paint and a medium dabber.
- poured a small amount of paint to dab the dabber in
- with a sponge dabber, dab into the paint
- apply the dabber flat on to the board where you want to have the eyes
- do the same thing for the other eye
With a thin paint brush dab the end into white paint. Dab it to the black eyes.
The last step for the eyes, use a black sharpie to make eyebrows and eyelashes.
Step Five
For my reindeer’s nose I am using a cap. Anything round would do. If you want a fun reindeer, paint the nose red, for mine I am mixing brown and black paint to create a dark brown color for the nose.
- paint the top and sides of your lid or cap
- dry brush white on the cap
- using E6000 to glue the cap onto the board where you want the nose to be
- wipe off any excess glue from the area
Step Six
Creating the mouth. With the black sharpie and a ruler draw a line in the center beneath the nose all the way down to the bottom of the board.
Step Seven
Wrap the bottom of the reindeer with twine or rope. I am using Dollar Tree rope, unwinding the braids, using one part of the rope.
- hot glue one end of the rope
- wrap the rope around the board
To clean up the rope, take a lighter running the flame on the rope. It burns off little ends of rope.
Taking a small piece of rope, fraying each end creating the look of an end of a scarf. Embellish to your liking.
Final Step
Embellish your reindeer. Adding more greenery, berries and ribbon.
- small pieces of gold coated fern pieces.
- ice crystal copper/gold berries
- gathering together some raffia, cutting the ends
- glue it to the back of the antlers
- make a shoestring bow with several strings of raffia
- hot glue it to the front of your reindeer
- trim the ends
- add a decorative ribbon and glue it on top of the raffia bow
- adds some berries and a leaf to the bow
As always, I hope I inspired you to try this craft for a Christmas decoration this year.
