DIY BLANKET LADDER

Hello friends!  I am late on getting my Sunday DIY out to you.  Seems like all last week I was running behind.  Hopefully this week I will be better about getting my post out on time to you.

SO….how have you been?  How was your weekend?  Did you do anything exciting?  Here, the weather was very cold.  We pretty much stayed indoors.  We did manage to get my DIY put together this afternoon.  I am excited to share with you the DIY that I did today.  It was fun working on this project.  Have you ever seen a blanket ladder?  I did one for my sweet cousin a year ago.  Well I didn’t build it but I was the master-mind behind it.  Today, I actually had my hands in on building one.  The one we did a year ago was more detailed.  The one I did today was very easy and didn’t take much effort.  Although I could have done this by myself, my husband felt the need to run the power tools for me.  That’s fine, I enjoyed working with him.

The tools I used were:

  • Three 2″ x 1″ x 6′ boards
  • 1 1/2″ nails
  • Hammer (we used a nail gun, but you can easily use a hammer)
  • circular saw
  • sandpaper
  • paint or stain
  • clean cloth – I used a cheese cloth
  • tape measure
  • pencil
  • square

We went to Lowe’s and purchased the boards for $2.53 each.  We were pretty picky on which one we wanted.  Most of them were warped.  Tip: make sure you get the straightest boards possible.

How to make your very own blanket ladder

Take one of the 2 x 1 x 6 and measure 18″ and mark.  Keep marking 18″ (you should have 4 pieces).  I will call these 4 pieces “steps”.

Take your square and make a straight line at the marks you just made.

Cut each line with your circular saw.  If you have a hand saw, that will work too.

You should have two 6′ boards and four 18″ pieces.

Place your two 6′ boards on a flat surface.

Measure for the first step 9″ from the top – Second step is 26″ from the top – Third step is 39″ from the top and the last step should be 52″ from the top.

Once you have your steps measured and marked, it is now time to place the steps on the frame.  I wanted the steps to over hang the frame a bit.  We measured the ends of the steps 3″ from the inside of the frame.

Put two nails on each side, one on the top corner and one on the opposite bottom corner.

My ladder is built.

I took 80 grit sandpaper and sanded the whole thing lightly.

I wanted my ladder to be stained.  I applied the stain with a cheese cloth and only applied one coat.  I didn’t seal the ladder.  I should have and maybe will at a later date.  You can also paint it…that would look good too.

That’s it.  I had the stain from my table makeover and we had the nails, so the only cost were the boards.  A total of $8.27.

Here are some ways I can style it:

Bathroom – I placed a wire basket that I had from the Dollar Tree.  Tied some twine to the basket and attached it to the top step.  Placed some white wash cloths and a little plant in the basket.  Put my bath monogram towels over a step.  Pretty isn’t it?

Bedroom – I placed some greenery to the top right side of the ladder and two throws.  Another pretty good wall decor and a functional place to store your throws.

Kitchen – Placed a small wreath on one side of the top of the ladder.  Place a kitchen dish towel on the next step to the side.  On the third step I placed my hello sign that I purchased at the Dollar General Store.  I then took the same Dollar Tree basket and tied it to the step with twine and placed some greenery inside.  Finally, I placed another kitchen dish towel.  I LOVE this one.

What do you think?  Are you going to make one for yourself?  It is very easy to make and you can use it anywhere in your home and style it to your own liking.

Here it is one more time in my kitchen.

I hope you enjoyed my Sunday DIY.  I really enjoyed making it with my husband.  I am not too sure what room I will place it in.

  1. Aren’t you just handy with the tools…!! It really looks nice in every room you put it in. I think my fav is in the bathroom. I like your monogramed towels…they really stand out. You really nailed it this time… 😉 I do have a question. I don’t work with wood much at all, so I may be missing something. It says the boards are 1 inch & nails are 1 inch. How does it hold if they are both 1 inch…??

    1. Thanks Lucy, sorry it suppose v to say 1 1/2″ thank you both. You are too smart. You know what you are doing! 😊. I fixed the wrong measurements. I love all three placements too.💙. As always thank you for commenting.
