Let’s make a DIY Fall leaf garland made out of brown shipping paper! It looks surprisingly realistic and costs next to nothing. If you are intrigued, keep on reading!
Welcome to our Creative Craft hop, I want to mention, Sara Birdz of a Feather and Donna Modern on Monticello they both are the master minds for the monthly blog hop, they both do a fantastic job gathering up talented crafters to provide you inspiration. This month we have 7 crafters sharing step by step creative crafts with you, at the bottom of my page, I will share each participant’s link to their craft.

I have been admiring the large brown Fall leaf stems and garlands I see so many influencers style in their homes. I would love to have them for myself. They are very pricy, so I decided to try my hand in making some out of Dollar Tree brown shipping paper.
If you are interested in trying your hand in making it, I am sharing the tutorial below. My garland is 20 inches long. For longer garland add more inches and leaves.
DIY Brown Paper Maple Leaf Garland
Supplies needed:
- Brown shipping paper
- Leaf pattern, large and medium size (I freehanded mine)
- Wire jute rope
- Floral wire
- Brown floral tape
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paint and paint brush
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
First Step: Trace out 6 large leaves and 18 medium leaves.
I cut my leaf patterns out of a cardboard gift box for it to be sturdier to trace around.
Step Two: Paint the leaves.
I split the medium leaves into two piles: 9 in one pile and 9 in the other.
Paint the first set of 9 leaves with burnt umber craft paint.
I watered down the paint so it would be more translucent.
Painted front and back with the brown paint.
Using craft clothes pins and a wire hanger to dry my leaves.
With the 6 large leaves I painted them with Antique White, I also watered down.
Paint the front and back. I hang them up to dry as well.
Step three: Create the look of leaves.
- Scrunch up the leaf in your hand to cause wrinkles.
- Fold the leaf in half, making sure you crease the fold.
- Make the veining of the leaf by folding to create lines.
- With a black thin black sharpie, draw the veins on the fold lines.
Step Four: Make the stems and leaf bendable.
To give your leaves flexibility, glue floral wire to the back of your leaf.
Step five: Form your garland.
- Cut the wire jute rope to 20 inches.
2. Add leaves to the rope by wrapping the wire of the leaf on the rope.
3. Finish with wrapping the brown floral tape around the rope and wires.
4. Keep on adding the leaves to the rope, rotating the colors.
I made a small garland to fit on my paint cabinet in the craft room.
I did the same steps with the leaves on a branch to place in a vase on the other side of the cabinet to complete the look for Fall.

Stay strong and God bless! ♥
Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
These look so good. I wouldn’t have thought about painting them so thanks for sharing that idea.
Terrie, this is a lovely neutral accent for fall–pinned! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction
Wow Terrie; this is gorgeous! Amazing that you can create this out of something as common as shipping paper (I probably have some of that in my Amazon box delivery lol)!
I have seen people do this and as I was making mine I was skeptical. They did turn out super cute. Thanks Sara!
