This month’s inspiration photo below is from Samantha over at Little Bit of Home. I love her color glass paired with the yellow Forsythia branches, isn’t this such a pretty mantel display?
This inspiration had me thinking what can I do. I have several green color glass pieces and love……
but I wanted to do something other than just style my green pieces. You know me….I have to make something !! 🙂
That’s just what I did. Let’s get started making our own colored glass!!!! It was so exciting to watch the clear glass turn into a colored piece. I am still amazed.
Here are the items you will need to make your own colored glass. What’s so great about making your own….you can make the glass ANY color you want! How fun is that?
Items you will need
- a clear glass container
- food coloring
- modge podge clear
- 2 containers (1 for your mixture and one larger to catch all the drippings
- alcohol
- clean cloth
- plastic spoon
- rubber gloves
- cookie sheet
- oven preheated to 200°
I started with a clean glass container. I gave my vase a good washing, dried it and then sprayed my alcohol mixture to give it one last cleaning.
I took my modge podge and food coloring and mixed the two together. Depending on the size of your glass container will determine how much modge podge you use. My vase is 14 inches tall I used 1 cup of modge podge. (the second one I did was 11″ tall and I used 1/2 cup) For the color I went with blue, I dropped about 50 drops of blue. When I was mixing it I thought it wasn’t as dark as I wanted, but actually it came out perfect. The color dries about 2 to 3 shades darker than the mixture.
I made sure the glue mixture was mixed well. I poured the glue into my vase.
I twirled the paint in the vase until the inside of the vase was entirely covered with the colored glue.
When the glue got to the top of the vase I placed my container underneath to catch all the drips. Next time I will use a larger container. 🙂
Make sure you don’t disturb the inside of your vase. If you see an air bubble just gently pop it and twirl the vase to cover up the area again.
When the vase was all covered I used my alcohol mixture again and cleaned the outside of my vase. I made sure I didn’t disturb the top or the inside of my vase.
I preheated my over to 200°. I placed my vase in the center of a cookie sheet.
My vase was pretty tall so I removed all my oven racks and placed the cookie sheet on the bottom of my oven.
Let the vase bake for 1 hour.
After an hour I place the vase some where it can cool for an hour. As it cooled it became more transparent.
When it cooled I took a soft cloth and buffed the inside to remove all the glue’s film. And again cleaned the outside of my vase.
I took some color string adding it to the neck of my vase. I placed green, orange and brown string ribbon from the Dollar Tree. I added just a touch of hot glue and wrapped the string around the neck.
I am amazed at how modge podge and food color made a stained glass. I love it! I placed this one in my large floor lantern.
I painted another vase in a blue/green color to match (or tried too) the green glass on my foyer table. You can catch my video tutorial in my FACEBOOK HIGHLIGHTS or my INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHTS.
I styled the table in our foyer instead of my mantel for the Pinterest Challenge. I added my green vase with some faux greenery and moved things around just a little.
I hope I inspired you to make your own colored glass decorative piece. Making the vase a color to fit your home decor is fun and so affordable. Pin my tutorial for later.

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
Just beautiful, Terrie! I would never have thought to try and color glass ~ really a neat idea!! I love how your tabletop turned out and it works just as well as a mantel anyday.
Enjoy your “new” vases,
Barb 🙂

It was fun watching the glue turn into a stain glass. Amazing. Really it is. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such a sweet comment. Thank you Jerri!
I’ve said this before and still mean it… you need your own craft show dang it! You are always so creative. I never think about doing what you do. Does it always turn out so stinkin’ cute? Love that you did your entry table instead of the mantel. Beautiful job! Thanks bunches for joining us!
Thank you so much Cindy for your sweet comment! Sometimes it doesn’t turn out like I would hope, but then I make it work by changing it some. Thank you for hosting this fun challenge.
And here I thought it was going to be stained glass spray paint. So happy to be surprised. Looks really nice and would fit in with my beach decor so am going to have to try this. What exactly was your alcohol mixture?
I love using alcohol and water in a spray bottle for all my counter tops and mirrors. I use 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% water, I poured it into a spray bottle.
I am so glad you like this little DIY. I was so surprised how well it turned out. Tag me girl when you make yours. I want to see!

I had no idea you could do that with modge podge! I’ve always got that stuff around here; thanks for letting me know another way I can use it! I love how you always have to make something, Terrie! Create on, girl!
I was amazed at how it stained the glass with the food coloring. Something about the DIYer in me I guess. Love hopping with you. Have a great day Lora!
this is such a fun idea and thanks so much for the tutorial. wow, the possibilities are endless to transform bunches of blah clear glass containers. Love the small table that you used as your base!
Thank you so much. Yes….I could be doing this all day with what I have stored away. I will be doing more glass for the new seasons.
I love this Terrie! What a great DIY! I can’t wait to try this project.
Oh I am so happy that you found this DIY a fun thing to do. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out. Thank you so much!
What a neat project! I have a few old jars and vases that could benefit from such a cute and clever transformation.
It was a neat little project. I never thought it would be so pretty. I will be doing this with a couple more pieces for different season. Thanks for stopping by. Love our blog challenge.
Terrie, of course, I love your DIY project. I posted how to tint mason jars back in June. It’s really so easy. Adding the jute string is a great idea to add a little rustic flavor.
It was neat watching the modge podge mixture transform to a stain glass. Never knew that before. I will have to go check out your blog on how you did it. Thank you Carol.
Wow. That is so cool. I had no idea you could bake Mod Podge. It looks amazing. You always have the best crafts. Cute display too.
Thank you Katie so much! I was amazed about the outcome, still am. I was just going to try it to see and was blown away. I will be doing more glass. Have a great day!
Thank you for teaching me how to color glass. I’m thinking of colors that I could use for different seasons. I see florist vases at Goodwill frequently and this would be a great way to use them for seasonal decor.
You are so welcome! I was blown away with every step I took with the coloring. From adding the paint, baking, cooling and then buffing it out. AMAZING. I am so happy that you are going to try some yourself. Please let me know how they turn out. Thank you!
Terrie fantastic job. I love what you created it looks so pretty and actually cozy.
You ladies are doing a fantastic job
