I am taking a piece of fence board and a scrap piece of board to make my star.  I am in the patriotic mood, let’s get our red, white and blue mojo going!

With my miter saw I cut the end of my fence board at a 45-degree angle.

Make your 8 points.

You will cut 8 pieces at the same size.  The size to cut will be the width of your board.  My board is 5 1/2 inches.

Cut each piece by placing the top cut (short side of the 45-degree cut) at the measurement of the board.  Remember mine was at 5 1/2 inches.  I hope this makes sense.

I cut a piece of scrap wood in a 5 1/2-inch square for a back support piece.  Sanded each of my piece.

I layout my pieces into the star to make sure they fit nicely together.

Paint your 8 points.

You can use any type of paint, I am using red, blue and white latex paint.

To keep my pattern as is, I marked each piece with the color paint.

I painted the front and all 4 sides of all my points.

This is how my star looks all painted.

Adding some polka dots to the two blue pieces with a pencil eraser and white paint.

It is looking pretty cute, don’t you think?

Attaching your 8 points together.

Let the paint dry thoroughly.  To attach your pieces together, I added wood glue to the scrap piece of wood.

Using my nail gun, I attached the long points of the pieces in the center of the glued square.

To help keep the pieces lifted I added a piece of scrap wood underneath them.

This is what the bottom of my star looks like.

To fill in the nail holes I applied wood filler, let it dry, sanded and touched up with paint.

And here is what it looks like all finished!!
