Happy Friday everyone!

Do you like having a garden flag out in your yard?  Do you find that they fade and you can only use it for one season? And…..they are harder to find in stores these days?  Maybe I can help with all those questions if you answered all of them with a YES!  Today I am going to share how I made a garden flag for my flower garden.  I was searching online to purchase a garden flag for our yard, I couldn’t find any cute flags in our area.  I found one that was $19.99 I really didn’t want to spend that much on a flag for just a couple of months.  You know me, let’s make one!  So, that’s what I did.  This DIY is very easy to do, I know you will be able to make one for your garden too!  Oh and one more thing…it isn’t going to cost you much at all, YAY!

After making my table runner (HERE) and burlap book cover (HERE) I had plenty of burlap to make one garden flag.  Remember I purchased my roll of burlap from Hobby Lobby for $4.99.  HERE it is online.

Below are the items I will be using for my flag:

• flag stand.
• burlap 12″ x 36″
• craft paint
• paint brush
• sewing machine (you can hand sew the flag)
• thread
• straight pins
• wire ribbon
• letter stencil
• ruler
• scissors
• pencil or marker

Let’s get started!

 

1. Making the Flag

Take your burlap and measure 12″x 36″

Fold the burlap in half.  The fold should be at the top and the cut edges to the bottom.

Stitch the flag.

• At the top of your flag, measure down 2 inches all the way across pinning a seam line.

• Stitch across the flag (with your sewing machine or by hand).  I doubled stitch my seam just to have a secure stitch.  This will create the pocket that the flag rod will insert into in order to hang your flag.   I used black thread since my design will be black.

2. Decorate the Flag

• Now that you have made the main part of your flag, you can create whatever design you want.

I typed in “Monogram T” in my google search bar.  I found some really cute designs.  I saved the one I wanted to my computer and then printed two copies.  I probably could of went a little larger with the monogram, but I enlarged the design to 150%.

I took one of the stencil and placed it between the two layers.  I used the ruler to make sure the stencil was centered on my flag.  Once it was centered I took 4 straight pins and pinned it in place.

I used black chalk paint for my design.  You can see the pattern through the burlap so all you have to do is paint the pattern.  Nothing too it.

This is what it looks like after I finished painting the first side.

I let that dry for 2 hours.

I wanted a double sided flag so once the first side was dry I did the same steps on the other side.

Once both sides were dry, I stitched the sides and bottom of the flag together.  *DO NOT SEW THE ROD POCKET UP*

To make it weather proof I sealed the whole flag with spray lacquer.  I used what we already had, but you can use any type of sealer.  You want to use a sealer so the paint will not wash off when it rains.

The last decorating step would be to make a cute bow.  A flag wouldn’t be complete without a cute bow!  I tied mine to the flag pole with a zip tie and not to the flag itself.

When I place my garden flag on my stand I use a zip tie and tie the garden flag to the stand.  I thread the zip tie through the burlap and around the pole.  This keeps the flag from coming off the stand in high winds.  To remove, I just snip it off.

I painted the zip ties black so they will be less noticeable.

 

This is such a cute flag and didn’t cost me anything but an hour of my time. (not counting drying time).

I think I will be making a lot more flags in the future.

Here is the other side.  I pulled some loops and a tail around so both sides would have a bow.
