DIY PUMPKIN FRAMED ART

Hey there! It’s another Thrift Store Challenge?  I am joining 6 other friends to share our thrift store finds or repurposing something we have sitting around our home today.  I will share all of my friend’s blog links at the bottom of my page.  A big thanks to Emily with LeCultivateur and Tara with Stilettos and Shiplap for hosting this fun challenge each month.

Today I am excited to share with you a DIY Fall Decor.  Using a wooden frame I picked up several years ago at a Thrift store.   I love looking for frames when I am in a thrift store.  I pick up wooden frames when the price is cheap low.  Wooden frames are the best to find.  I am sharing my first Fall DIY home décor this season, let’s get started!

To make your own Pumpkin Framed Art you will need:

• Picture frame – I am using a wooden 11 x 14 frame
• Piece of poster board to fit inside your frame
• Cardstock – I am using a Harvest check pattern
• Harvest wording
• Embellishments for your pumpkin – I used raffia, burlap leaf and curly twig pick
• Pumpkin shape to trace your shape out
• Glue – hot glue and regular craft glue stick
• Wood stain – I used Minwax English Chestnut
• Sandpaper – 50 grit
• Craft knife and scissors

Funny how things work out.  I wanted a thin wooden frame to use for this DIY.  I was thinking on sanding off the paint and stain it a lighter color.  The frame I am using had Christmas ornaments glued to it.  When I removed the Christmas ornaments I marred the frame.  I was just going to sand and paint it instead of staining. 🙁 When I turned it around I noticed that the back of the frame was the perfect look.  So Plan A was still in play.  I started sanding the back of my frame.

I sanded the sides as well.  It turned out the perfect frame for my project.

Before I stain my frame I am going to cut the poster board to fit inside my frame.  I traced around the frame, I did have to trim some of it to fit into my frame.

It’s crazy how things just work out.  Since I am using the back of the frame, the part of the frame that holds the glass and backing will serve as the support for my poster board.  How fun it that !!

Now that I have my poster board the perfect size, it’s time to stain my frame.  I am using Minwax English Chestnut.  Using a makeup sponge to apply the stain and wiping it down with a clean cloth.

I put my stained frame to the side and worked on my design.  For my pumpkin shape I am using this pumpkin wall hanging sign from Dollar Tree.  I centered the pumpkin and traced around it.

Taking my crafter’s knife and cutting on the line.

Taking my piece of scrap book paper, I cut it to size and glued it to the front side of the poster board.  (I wanted to use the flat side instead of the shining side for my background).  My scrap book paper has a distressed look to it that’s why you see dark spots on it. 🙂

Now it is time to decorate my pumpkin.  I am using a curly twig and a burlap green leaf.  The leaf was in a package of leaves I found at Dollar Tree last year.  I am using this Harvest word I found last Fall season at Dollar Tree also. It came in a package of three words. I spray painted it dark green.

Adding my design to the frame with hot glue.

Taking a minute to look at my design I noticed it needed something…..so I added a raffia bow to the stem with hot glue.

Yes….so much better.  I am in love with this little Fall framed pumpkin.  This is SO budget friendly, literally cost less than $2 to make.

Can’t wait to style this little cutie on my mantel.  Go check out your old frames you have stored away and turn them around to see what type of style it has.  You never know. 🙂

I hope you like my little Fall Pumpkin Framed Art I made with a thrift store frame.  Never know what you can find at a thrift store…so go shopping today and take a look at picture frames.

    1. Thanks sweet girl! I just don’t have the time to sell anything. I love making things and share with everyone how to, but to sell is just not in me. I hope you have a wonderful week.

    1. Thank you sweetheart. I amazed myself sometimes. ha! I am kind of glad now that I marred the front up. I am always happy to share what I learn from my DIYs.

  1. Terrie this is so cute! I did a similar thing last Christmas with a cheap frame etc and they are so easy and so cute. I love it! Love how you used the back of the frame too. I’m not sure I would have even thought of that. You are so creative.

    1. Thanks Tara! At first I was going to use the front like most people. 🙂 But I marked it all up trying to remove the old decorations I had on it. I was going to start sanding and just paint it. When I turned it around I noticed the backs design. Light bulb went off. ha! Worked so much better than I could of pictured. Thank you!
