On today’s blog I am making a maple leaf, This wooden leaf will add some Fall season to your kitchen countertop! It can lean against your backsplash, or it can be used as a base for your decor.

 

To make a wooden leaf here are the supplies you need.

Supplies:

• 1×10×10 pine board
• stain
• rope
• leaf to trace around
• marker to trace the pattern onto the board

Tools:

• bandsaw, or jig saw or scroll saw
• drill and drill bit
• orbital sander
• hand grinder

To start trace the leaf onto your board.

Next, cut the shape out with a bandsaw or jig saw, since this leaf has so many points, be sure to make relief cuts for easy cutting.

Once the leaf is cut out, sand the front, back and edges. Be sure to get your marker or pencil lines sanded off.

After sanding, drill a hole in the center of the stem so a piece of rope can be thread through.

I then stained the entire leaf with one coat of Espresso stain.

An after thought I decided to create veins on the leaf, I first marked the lines with a sharpie.

With a hand grinder, I engraved the lines to the wooden leaf.  I made sure I didn’t keep the grinder long in one spot.

Using the sander one more time to sand the front.  I applied a coat of Espresso in the lines and to the entire front of the leaf.

Spray a coat or two of polyurethane to the leaf.

Once dry, thread the rope into the hole and tie a knot.

Here is the finished wooden maple leaf!
