FLOOR IS DONE!!

Today I’m back with another progress report on our daughter’s bathroom, we are done with the floor!  And it looks great!  You can go catch up on the Bathroom Makeover to see what all we have done so far.

Jim and I were visiting family during the holidays and went into Lowe’s one evening.  They had flooring on sale 50% off.  Actually, this store was going out of business and had the whole store 50 – 70% off.  We saw this tile and I thought Kristin would love it.  I texted her a picture and sure enough she did.  It is ceramic tile by Style Selections, style Sequoia Ballpark 6-in X 36-in Porcelain Wood Look Floor And Wall Tile.

Remember what the floor looked like before this makeover?

We are not professionals, we love to save money and try doing things ourselves.  I am sure the way we installed the floor isn’t how some would install it, but our way works for us.  Today I am going to run through the floor project with you.

For homework, Kristin ripped up the vinyl from the floor.  Having this step done helped in speeding up the process of installing the cement board.  We thought…..when we got there we noticed that we needed to remove the thin underlayment first. 🙁

We attached the cement board (backer board) with screws.

My job was cutting around the toilet flange….I think I did a super job. 🙂  What do you think?

We decided to first lay the tile down and cut it before we glued it down to the floor.

Once we got the tile all cut and in place, I numbered the back of each tile with the row and column that piece was placed to keep them in order.  After we had the tile all picked up and in sections we started spreading out the mortar and laying the tiles in place.

We used 1/8 inch plastic tile spacers.

As we laid each tile I cleaned the grout lines with a plastic zip tie.  This helps to make sure all the spaces are free from mortar.

We let the tile sit for our next weekend project.

Before we applied the grout I cleaned the spaces between the tiles (grout line).  Even with us cleaning the spaces as we laid the tile there are still some areas we missed. I used a putty utility knife to clean the grout out.  It worked perfectly.

This allows the grout to go into the spaces evenly.  I then wiped down the tile with clean warm water to remove all the dust and dirt.

Jim had to work so Kristin and I did the grouting.  I read the directions on the back of the bag, mixing it until it was a peanut butter consistency.

We used Mapei Keracolor Grout from Lowe’s in Cocoa.

One other hard part of tiling the floor is getting all the grout film up off the floor.  We cleaned the floor about 10 time I guess before we felt the floor was clean.  We kept on getting new buckets of water until our water stayed clear.  Yeah….10 times washing this floor, did I tell you this bathroom is on the top floor?  Yeah two flights of stairs!!!  I didn’t want to empty the dirty water out in her bathtub or sink so we took it outside to empty.  My old self got a workout that day!

This weekend we are hoping to get the room finished.  I will be sharing the reveal SOON!!  Can’t wait myself on how the room looks all finished and decorated! 🙂
