Hello friends!

You have seen my hutch a bunch of times, but today I am going to share with you how I style my hutch and the process I use to style it.  Maybe it will help you when styling your built-in, hutch or even a wall shelf in your home.

I have been enjoying my hutch ever since I gave it a makeover back last year in October.  If you missed the makeover blog, you can go over to the before and after hutch project HERE.

Today I will share with you my steps that I use to style my hutch.  I am no pro by no means, but working with the steps helps to style it easier.  You might have a different approach to decorating your shelves, if so I would love for you to share it with me I am always open in learning better ways to decorate! 🙂

Let’s get started!

1. Start with a clean slate

Did I have to make that a step? 🙂  If you follow me, you should know my first step is….  Remove everything….make it naked! 🙂

 

     2.  Pick a theme or color

Gathering your items will be easier if you have a theme and color pattern.   I am getting ready for the Fall season so I am gathering all my fall items with the color theme for my room.

     3.  Adding your larger piece first

I gather all sorts of fall items in my color theme.  I placed the larger item for the base making sure I balanced the items on each shelf.   Normally the larger items are the focal pieces that glue each vignette together.

The tractor with pumpkins and raffia, it complements the pumpkins I have sitting on the shelf.

     4.  Add items with different height and shapes

Adding interest to your hutch with different height will be more appealing to the eye!  I like to use different sizes to each of my little vignettes.  Make sure that you don’t use too large or small of item, you don’t want it to look over crowded or look lost either.

I placed pumpkins with different size and color in a grouping to give the eye movement.

     5.  Bring in some texture

I love to see texture.  It could be flowers, plants or material.  Most of the time you wouldn’t even recognize the textures.

The photo below will help to explain what I am talking about with adding texture to your vignette.  The candle stick has a design to it and is distressed, the flower is airy and the little urn is rough while the pumpkins are smooth they all have their own type of texture, but giving some interest to the vignette.

 

6.  The last tip, make sure that the hutch ties into your room’s decor.  Everything on your hutch should work if you took it off and placed it somewhere else in the room.
