It’s the big reveal ((finally))!  Over the past 5 weeks I have been working in our laundry room for the $100 Room Challenge hosted by Erin from Lemons, Lavender & Laundry.  As a reminder the $100 Room Challenge rule – spending only $100 to makeover one room in your home.  Check out everyone’s room reveals at the bottom of my page.

Looking back at my last $100 Room Challenge I called it the power of paint.  This challenge is the power of DIYs.   Here are the DIYs I did in the room.

  • I revamped a thrift store bench
  • painted a buffalo plaid wall
  • made a coat rack with a shelf
  • revamped a light fixture grid
  • created a wall art from things I had at home
  • painted the cabinets
  • revamped the hamper
  • making a curtain slip for the door

I am so happy to tell you that my work is done.  Now it’s time to show off my laundry room and all my hard work.  First let’s look back at what the room looked like in the beginning.

BEFORE

AFTER

I knew $100 wasn’t a lot of money since I needed to buy cabinet paint from Benjamin Moore (a big chunk of the budget) plus I wanted to add some personality to the room as well.  Our medium size laundry room had nothing sitting in it besides the hamper.  So I wanted to address a sitting area and more wall decorations.

Here are the changes I made to the laundry room.

With only three cabinets, trim and a rod to paint.  I didn’t have to get a gallon I only had to purchase 1 quart of paint.  For the wall paint 1 gallon was all I needed, I was lucky and found the paint at the Habitat Restore.

I painted the cabinets with Benjamin Moore Seattle Gray.  With the lighting in the room it wasn’t dark enough for me so I took it back and changed it’s color a little darker. I am happy with the color now.

Here’s the buffalo plaid wall with my little changes.  If you missed the tutorial on how I painted the wall, here’s the link for you ⇒ DIY BUFFALO WALL .

I added white to the base color squares and distressed the square.

On the wall I added a hook and some hangers for easy access.  The hook was taken off of the coat rack I taken down and put away.

The picture frame I moved to this wall, I just added a new background with scrapbooking paper.  The pin art I found on Amazon.

I gave my hamper a little change.  I filled in the wheat design with wood putty, sanded, painted it white and added blue stripes.

The opposite wall where the coat rack was on the wall I added a pretty little wall grouping.   My DIY laundry signs, an empty frame with my DIY cotton blooms and lamb’s ear wreath tucked inside and a wooden word sign.  Here are the tutorials for both the LAUNDRY SIGNS & LAMB’S EAR and COTTON BLOOMS WREATH.

I removed my valance and replaced it with a DIY slip cover to hide the blind casing.  I used left over material from my patio pillows.

Creating a sitting area I revamped a thrift store bench.  It was the perfect size for my space.  To read how I revamped the bench click here ⇒ THRIFT STORE BENCH.

Another DIY is this coat rack with a shelf, I found the hooks on Amazon, a package of 5.  I made a similar shelf in our master bathroom $100 Room Challenge.  To go read that tutorial you can click here ⇒ TOWEL BAR SHELF.

On the shelf I took a broken fluorescent light grid from our kitchen light,  I cut the grid to fit on my shelf.  I placed my DIY olive topiary, my wooden spindles and a framed art. I just love how this shelf looks.  To go view my topiary tutorial you can click here ⇒ FAUX OLIVE TREE TOPIARY.

I found the HOME SWEET HOME sign at Old Time Pottery.

On the floor I added two throw rugs.  I purchased the two rugs for our back patio last Fall when they were on clearance, I am borrowing them now until I can find the rugs I want.

Let’s take a look at the budget.  $100 allowed

  • Paint for cabinets – $36.72
  • Primer, sandpaper and brushes – $0 (had supplies on hand)
  • sponge roller – I purchased a package of 2 rollers = $5.44
  • 1 gallon of paint for laundry room walls – $16.00 (no tax charge at Thrift store)
  • Stain, paint and primer for bench – $0 (had supplies on hand)
  • Bench purchased at Thrift store – $5.00 (no tax charge)
  • Painter’s tape – $4.36
  • 5 bronze coat hooks – $13.49
  • Shelf – $0 (had supplies on hand)
  • Curtain – $0 (had material left over from patio)
  • Rugs – $0 (borrowing from another room)
  • Home decor – $43.69

Total spent so far = $124.70

I went over $24.70 which if I would of shopped my home on décor pieces I could of stayed on budget.  Even buying things 50% off it still added up before I knew it.  It is what it is and I love how the room looks with everything I placed in it.

  1. What a refreshing new look! I am so impressed! Everything looks beautiful Terrie! That accent wall looks amazing! I love all the decor details that you added to this space! I think your DIY bench looks darling too! Great Job!

  2. WOW! You accomplished so much in this space! I absolutely love that you reused a fluorescent light grid to add decor to your shelf. That was brilliant! The cabinet color is gorgeous… I am always amazed at the power of paint. Thanks for joining in another round of the challenge!

    1. Thanks Erin for your sweet comment and for hosting this fun challenge.

When the grid fell off the light fixture a couple years ago I knew that I might be able to use the grid some how down the road. So glad that I did hold on to it. We cut it down to fit on the shelf. I wanted something wood color up there with all the white. This was perfect.

  3. Everything turned out so cute Terrie!! Adding the touch of white to the buffalo check relly made a difference and that wall just sets the whole room off. I also seriously love how the wall with the bench and the coat rack turned out!!! It not only adds some awesome functionality but it fills up the room so great – you styled that shelf perfectly too!

    1. Awe thanks Lindsey. I am happy with how the room turned out. Everything was fun working on. So happy we had 5 weeks this challenge. Can’t wait to see what we all do next go around. ha!

  4. Terrie, your laundry room looks great. I love that bench and the buffalo check wall. All your little touches are so pretty too and I know how fast it can all add up. Well done!

    1. Thanks Patti. I am so happy how the bench fit in our room. It was a great find for sure. It sure does…I would put it down and then pick it back up. ha!

  5. Oh, Terrie what an amazing makeover! I LOVE the buffalo check walls. The blue and white really brightens up the space. You always amaze me on your room makeovers. So talented and creative. Also, you knocked it out of the park with your DIY artwork. Great job!

    1. Thanks Tammy. It all came together at the last minute. ha! I still want to do a few more things like spray paint the handles of the doors and paint the baseboards. Always something. I love working on hops with you. It is so much fun.

    1. Thanks Jen. I do love the color of my cabinets now. It sure brightens up the room. I enjoy working with you on the challenge. Until next one!

  6. Oh goodness, Terrie I just LOVE everything! But that buffalo check wall has to be my favorite! SO darn cute! And all the decor choices you made are so spot on for a cozy space! I would actually enjoy doing laundry there!!

    1. Thanks Lia. Oh yeah. Not really a “thrift store” but the Habitat restore uses recycled paint and turn it into a fresh gallon of paint with a designers new color. We don’t get it often at the store new us but when they do get some in it goes quickly.

    1. I think so too Pamela. The favorite for me in my sitting area. I never really had any type of sitting area in there and wondered now why I hadn’t. Thank you so much.

    1. Elizabeth I haven’t did laundry since I finished the room. 🙁 I will and probably won’t mind it as much. I still need to paint the doors and door knobs. That will get done.
