LAUNDRY ROOM – WEEK 2 – CLEAN SLATE

Week Two and I am just now getting the room ready.  It is time for a $100 Room Challenge update.  If you are now joining me on my Laundry room challenge let me direct you to Week 1.  Click here ⇒  $100 ROOM CHALLENGE – LAUNDRY ROOM – WEEK 1.  If you want to take a look at my very first room challenge you can click here ⇒  $100 ROOM CHALLENGE.  The challenge is hosted by Erin over at Lemons, Lavender & Laundry.  She has some great ideas to stay on a $100 budget.  Go check her out!  At the bottom of my page, you know I will list all the $100 Room Challenge participants at the bottom of my page. 🙂

So what have I been up too the last week?  Well, it hasn’t been painting or any great DIYs…it has been getting the laundry room ready to start working.  Every year we move the washer and dryer from the wall to clean out the dryer vent.  The reason why we have to do this is because our wall is on the other side of our double car garage which isn’t an outside wall.  The dryer vent pipe is under our garage floor, runs through to an outside wall.  The dryer vent has about 4 bends from the back of the dryer to the outside wall.  This causes lint to get trapped inside the pipe.  We went through 3 heating elements before we realized why, not very budget friendly! 🙁  Since we have to move the washer and dryer out from the wall and cabinets what better time to clean the vent out than now?  Here are the steps we take to clean out the dryer vent pipe.

  1. Mr. Tip takes a plumber’s drain snake and feeds it through the vent knocking the stuck on lint
  2. Taking the yard blower, placing it inside the dryer vent
  3. Blowing out the loosen lint until nothing comes out

I removed the wall decor from all the walls and patched up the nail holes and nicks with spackle.  After it dried I sanded and wiped down the walls.

I also removed the wall decal.  It was easier than I thought, it didn’t mess up the wall at all.  I used a dull putty knife to get it started.  Once a little came up I peeled it right off.

To get the cabinets ready to be painted I removed the cabinet doors and drawer, sanded, I used simple green to clean the cabinets and then I primed all the cabinets.

I decided to paint the inside of the cabinets as well.

Week 2 expenses:

  • Primer – I had primer left over from my last project = $0
  • sponge roller – I purchased a package of 2 rollers = $5.44

Off to a budget friendly start.  🙂

Here is what I still need to do

  1. Paint cabinets
  2. Paint walls
  3. Paint the buffalo plaid wall
  4. Build a bench and shelf
  5. Paint closet door and inside exterior door
  6. Paint trim and crown molding
  7. Spray paint door knobs
  8. Decorate the space

  1. Do you sometimes question what people were thinking when they built your house? Glad to hear you figured out why the heating elements kept malfunctioning… and that you never had a fire from all those bends in the piping that stored so much lint. Looks like you are well on your way to a very productive week.

    1. We would of never of thought about how the dryer vent was installed…who would of thought? Anyway when we had two of the heating elements go out someone told us about trapped lint and how it starts fires in homes. So twice a year we clean it out.

Thanks for hosting this great challenge.

  2. You have made such great progress this week, Terrie! I can’t wait to see the cabinets and the wall color you chose. Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

  3. The prep of a project is always the worst part for me. I cant wait to see how the cabinets turn out & great job on the budget so far!

    1. I finally added the last coat of paint to the cabinets so they are done. I still have the walls to paint and two focal walls to create. The budget keeps going up. ha! Thanks for coming by my friend.

  4. Oh my goodness Terrie – you have accomplished so much! You were so smart to completely clean out, patch and repair the entire room before getting started. Sometimes we forget to do that due to our excitement of getting started LOL – and pay for it in the end. Can’t wait to see more!

    1. I have done that so many times it isn’t fun at all. I do it in the beginning so I don’t forget now. ha! After the cabinets it seems like you can see more that is getting done. Cabinet painting isn’t a fun job but it is the biggest change in a room. I am so excited to see what you have been working on as well. Follow your every step!

    1. It seems like this part takes the longest. Hopefully I am on the last coat of paint for the cabinets. After this it will be easier to see things get done.

  5. There is something about this step that I really enjoy. Weird, right! I think it’s knowing that it’s here, in its most broken down stage, you have a clean slate. Clean to transform it into something amazing. This is probably why I love the New Year so much as well as the first day of school. Perfect title btw. Am so looking forward to the transformation of your laundry room.

    1. I know what you mean about the first step of a project. When you have to clean and organize. I love the ending when it is all in order and cleaned. I am taking each room while everything is bare. Takes a long time to get your house in order but only takes seconds to mess it up…ha!

    1. I do too Jen, but the prep work is for the birds. ha! I wanted a light blue but the paint and lighting isn’t working well together. I have to change the yellow warmer light bulbs to more of a cool light. Maybe that will help. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. I sure hope so Patti. The hardest part is the prep work. I am excited to be putting the paint on the cabinets. I picked out a certain color but with the light in there it looks more white than blue. I will have to stop painting and change those darn light bulbs out for a more cooler light bulb.
