Welcome back to One Room at a Time | Master Bedroom Refresh, it’s the first project day; accent wall. Tammy Patina and Paint and Teresa Through a Vintage Door will be sharing their first project day as well.
I have my work cut out for me on this first project!! Not only do I have to create a focal wall, but I also have to remove the wallpaper first.
Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I didn’t even have to use my putty knife to help me remove the paper. I used hot water and 1 tablespoon of Downy fabric softener in a squirt bottle to the wallpaper and it worked great!
First Day: Removal of Wallpaper and Glue
To begin, I removed the top layer of paper, saturated the section with the fabric softener mixture which it came down fairly easy.
After I removed the paper, I took several buckets of hot water to wash the glue from the wall with a sponge.
Second Day: Board and Batten Grid Accent Wall
To read my previous tutorial on how I added board and batten to a wall you can read here:
HOW TO ADD BOARD AND BATTEN TO YOUR WALL.
To keep the spaces 18 inches apart consistent, I cut a piece of board 18 inches long, I used that as a spacer for my vertical and horizontal boards.
It’s looking great so far.
Third Day: Caulking and Filling
Another not so fun project day, filling in all the crevices and nail holes with Painter’s putting and paintable caulk to fill in all the gaps.
Fourth Day: Sanding and Priming
Once the caulk and painter’s putty are dry, sand lightly with 120 grit sandpaper. Prime the boards with Bullseye’s 123 primer. Once primer had time to dry, sand the boards one last time.
Last Day: Paint
This step is the most satisfying, adding the actual paint to the wall. I went with Wild Wilderness by Glidden. I gave the wall two coats of paint, allowing the paint to dry between the coats.
So happy the wall is finished, it looks amazing.
So, what do you think of the wall?
Now that the accent wall is complete, it’s time to start planning on the decorations for the room!! Come back tomorrow where I share my decoration haul!

I just love this so much .. I might steal your idea and do it in a quest room .. Looking forward to seeing your reveal on Friday!
Great job Terrie!
Teresa!!
Please do. Tammy Patina and Paint did it in one of her guest bedrooms. 🙂
Oh Terrie! This looks so good! And boy did you do a ton of work. So beautiful. I can’t wait to see the rest of your room. Great job and thanks for sharing!
Thanks Tammy. It was a long process but not really hard. I am so glad the paper was an easy project, it could have been a nightmare for sure.
