Hello my dear friends! Thank you for stopping in today for a tour of our master bedroom. I did a makeover in our bedroom in the beginning of the year. I am very happy with this room and thought I would share it with you up close. Nothing better than giving you a tour of the room. This blog will have a LOT of photos. Just a warning!
Before we start the tour, I got a question for you…when you think of decorating a room in your home where would you place your bedroom on the list? Is it a priority or is it pushed to the bottom of the list? When I asked myself this question, I would have to say one of the top three rooms on the list. First being the living room, then the kitchen and then our master bedroom. Every room has a purpose and I want it to look it’s very best. Our master bedroom isn’t tucked away from our guest’s view. It is off the kitchen close to our guest bathroom. The door is always open so I make sure it is presentable at all times. It is the first view you see when coming into the house from the garage.
Just a little tidbit about me. Before I start a project I find an inspirational piece or photo, once I get that I start a binder for that particular project. I do not like to be unorganized, so the binder keeps me organized and feeling in control. I call that my Bible. After I find my inspirational piece I tend to evaluate everything I want and need. I look at what I have already and see what I can use. If it has to be painted or if I need to do a DIY, I make a “to do” list. I start researching the items I have to buy where I can find it at the lowest price. I normally do the painting and DIYs first before tearing into the room. When I have everything in order I start into that project. Having this system works for me and keeps me from losing my mind. It might not work for some, but for me this works.
Let’s get started on the tour. Come on in and enjoy the tour of our master bedroom.
This photo is at the doorway going into the bedroom. I love the feeling I get when walking into the room. It is a great feeling to be able to say “I love my bedroom” isn’t it? Don’t you just feel blah when you don’t like something. Just having your bed made when you walk into the room makes you feel different. I follow flylady, don’t know if you know what that is or not, but it is a website that helps people organize and clean their homes one step at a time. The creator of the blog states before you go to bed clean and shine your kitchen sink. Why she tells you do this, is because waking up to a shining and clean sink puts a smile on your face. No dirty dishes to wake up to. I honestly believe that is true about most anything in your home. My opinion, if you love something you tend to be more content and happy with it.
The colors of the walls are Pure Earth by Behr. We have a trey ceiling that I painted the same color as the walls. I wanted an accent wall but didn’t want a solid color or a wall of wallpaper, although after using the peel and stick wallpaper over at my daughter’s I might have consider it. I decided with a vertical striped wall to make the room look wider.
For the curtains, I did not want to go heavy, I went with a white sheer. The way I hang a curtain is; hang them as close to the ceiling as possible (making sure your curtains are long enough to touch the floor) this makes your room look taller.
For the headboard, I went with a fabric headboard in place of the headboard that matched the furniture. With the striped accent wall and the tall headboard I chose not to hang a wall piece over the bed.
The bedding – I went with a color that looks crisp and bright. I didn’t want any patterns on the bedding. I found this duvet set by Sateen with a taupe hotel stitched that has a double line embroidery stitch. I bought the sheets to match. I found the taupe quilt set, king size quilt and two king size shams from Zulily. The color could not match any better with the embroidery stitch.
For the pillow layout; going from back to front, I use 3-euro white Sateen shams with the hotel stitch that matches the duvet, 2 taupe king size quilted pillow shams, two of the white Sateen king size pillow shams that matches the duvet, two modern damask pattern pillows and a blessed pillow.
I folded a taupe quilt and placed it in the center of the bed. I placed a white tray with a taupe trim on top of the quilt, in the tray I placed a small oblong white metal pail to hold the remote control (for some reason the remote gets lost a lot, I thought this way we will know where it goes). I placed a small boxwood plant next to the remote holder. I placed a taupe and white hounds tooth throw on the foot of the bed. I really like the layer look of the bed. Now, let me explain how we undress the bed each night. We have an agreement that I make the bed in the mornings and my husband takes everything off for bed each night. We do not sleep under our duvet. So here is his job, after I showed him how to do it, he doesn’t complain doing it at all. He folds the throw and places it on the dresser, removes the tray and places on the throw. He folds the quilt in half and places it neatly on the hope chest at the end of the bed. He takes each throw pillow and shams to the corner of the room and lines them neatly up. The last part is he folds up the duvet in 3 folds and then in half and place it onto the folder quilt on the hope chest. Nothing too it! Right? I know that sounds a lot to do, but it is fairly quick after you do it each night. Just our routine.
I don’t often change my bedding. During the Christmas season I have a red duvet set that will take the place of the taupe set. I do have Christmas throw pillows that I will change out too. I will give you the Christmas tour when the house is all dressed for the season.
The furniture – We purchased the furniture 26 years ago, it was an oak finish. It was still in great condition just out dated, in my opinion. It had gold and ceramic handles. I decided to paint the furniture Edgecomb Grey by Benjamin Moore – Advance paint. I replaced the hardware also with chrome handles and pulls. I did one of my “show me” series on the nightstands click here to go view that post, so I will do a short version about them, I got the lamps from Kirkland’s. I wanted an airy, transitional feel and they work perfectly. I placed a faux flower arrangement on one stand along with a picture frame and candle. The picture in the frame is of my husband and myself in New York. It was a couple weeks before Christmas. I always wanted to go to New York around Christmas time. We had a very stressful year that year and needed some fun. What better way to end the year then going to a place I always wanted to go. It even snowed one day while we were there. Couldn’t have been any memorable. On the other nightstand I stacked two books and placed a ceramic letter T and sat a silver alarm clock in front.
The large dresser mirror was from Kirkland’s. The two vases I repainted them white and sanded a little to bring out the undertone shades of brown. Placed a picture frame and silver piece next to the vases. I need to replace that photograph of my husband and myself. That is a really old one. Need to update that. I need to do better about updating my photos in the frames around the house. It seems like I just dust them off but don’t update them. It is so much easier to take a photo and store it in a file on your phone…ha! Do you do that? I painted the tall thin décor piece, silver and white to combined the two colors on the dresser.
The chest of drawers – the faux plant I made myself. I purchased the container at Tuesday Mornings, I took some faux greenery and secured it in the bottom of the bowl. I stacked two faux book boxes on top of each other. The top one I painted and wrote the word “love songs’ on it. The metal sphere was purchased at Tuesday Morning’s also. The little succulent plant I purchased at TJ Maxx.
The TV armorer – I placed two silver candlesticks purchased at Ross, the lantern at
TJ Maxx, stacked books to raise the faux grass plant and a little silver piece. I think the little vignette is cute. Not a lot just enough to make it look nice.
The chest at the foot of the bed I painted and applied a dark glaze. I wanted it to mimic the headboard color. I place a khaki fabric to the top cushion. The same hardware was added to match the rest of the furniture in the room.
The little ladder-back rush chair I picked up at a thrift store for $4.00. The seat was in terrible shape. I replaced the rush and painted the chair. I also put a glaze on the chair to match the hope chest.
One thing I would love to change out and don’t know why I haven’t, is the ceiling fan. We never run it besides using the light. My husband can not tolerate the fan with his sinuses and I have to have a floor fan blowing on me due to “HOT FLASHES” “hey,” that could be a whole blog in itself. Ha! Why I didn’t change the light fixture when I made over this room is a question I ask myself all the time. When I find the perfect light fixture, that baby is coming down. I just haven’t found one that screams at me “TAKE ME HOME.”
One more view of the room from our bathroom doorway.
Alright, now comes to the part where I ask you again…. Where do you have your master bedroom on your list? I would give you a pep talk if it would help. As we all put ourselves last, we tend to do the same with our master bedrooms. We normally say, “once the other rooms are completed I will get to that room”, Why? We need a place at night where we can go to relax and unwind from the stressful day we had. Your bedroom should be a place of beauty, relaxation and somewhere you feel like a queen. Where you can lay your head down and melt away at night. Having your own personal sanctuary to recharge is what we all need. All it takes is a little time to think about what the room needs to make this happen. Is it just a nice new bedding set, or maybe soft silky sheets or maybe a whole renovation. Take your space and make it happen! Don’t push it a side and say, “oh, I will just shut the door”. Just putting a flower on your nightstand will make you smile. Do something for yourself for once. I promise the world will not come to an end.
This room is truly my retreat. I love this makeover probably the most. Thanks for stopping by and taking the tour of our master bedroom with me.
