Today on my Facebook page, I shared how I cleaned and conditioned our leather furniture. Since the furniture is all clean, it’s time to add the cherry to the top of my home decor. I am not a pro, to be honest, I am still learning how to mix and match throw pillows. Here are some of the things I keep in mind when placing pillows in our home.
Tammy Patina and Paint will be sharing her pillow placement as well, I will have her blog linked up at the bottom of my page.
It would seem that a person that decorates with LOTS of pillows would have it all mastered out, right? Not really, I still have troubles, I learned to keep three things in mind when I start searching for throw pillows.
Tips for Mix and Matching Throw Pillows
Take a good long look at the room, here are basic things to keep in mind when choosing throw pillows for your couch.
First Things: Create your color palette.
Start by creating a color scheme you already have in your room, pick at least three main colors.
The goal is to create a cohesive appearance. By doing this, your throw pillows become a vital part of the room’s design rather than just standalone pieces.
How many pillows for a couch?
Well, the answer is going to vary from person to person and from space to space!
As I researched this question, take into consideration what most interior designers recommend. Always style your pillows in odd numbers.
3-5 pillows on a small couch
5-7 pillows on a large couch
For my couch, I placed 3 Solid, 1 geometric pattern and 1 large pattern pillows.
2 Carmel Textured Boucle Throw Pillow
1 Off White Pillowcases Textured Boucle Throw Pillow
1 Oblong Charcoal Grey Wool Pillow Cover Grey Windowpane Pillow
1 Linen Brown and Black Vintage Floral Pillow
What size pillows do I need?
Here are the basic pillow sizes for couches:
- A standard square-sized throw pillow is about 20 inches.
- An oversized throw pillow (my fav) is about 22-24 inches.
- A smaller-sized throw pillow is about 18 inches or less.
- A lumbar pillow is about 12″x20″ or 12″x24″
Depending on what the look you want for your couch, you could use the same size pillows or layer your couch with different sizes.
How to mix and match patterns?
It’s perfectly fine if your pillows don’t match. While a formal look can be achieved by placing two identical pillows at each end of a couch, mixing patterns for a more relaxed and comfortable feel.
Keep in mind when choosing your patterned pillows, use at least one color in your color palette.
Well, my friend, I hope I gave you some tips on choosing throw pillows for your couch. Just follow these tips, and your home will become super comfy and stylish.

Stay strong and God bless! ♥
Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
I love the idea of mixing and matching pillow covers and textures. I do the same thing on my brown leather couch!
Thanks Gina. I have troubles with my dark color couch, you don’t find a lot of inspiration out there on dark brown couches. 🙁
Great job Terrie! You mix and match pillows look awesome!!! Very well done!
Well, thank you so much Tammy. I love playing around with patterns and colors, wish I was better at it. 🙂
