Hello my friends! I am so in love with my table area in the kitchen. With the painted table and chairs, hutch makeover and the wall decor now finished I just love sitting there just looking at it. I don’t sit much, but while I eat I am facing the area and I just love it!
This is the DIY project I did for the wall, opposite of the makeover hutch. If you are just now visiting and didn’t see my makeover hutch click here. It turned out fantastic! If I don’t say so myself.
I knew I wanted a mirror and shelf by the spare chair. I am not going to put the leaf in the table so 4 chairs will be used. Not too sure where I am going to place the 6th chair. I hate putting that back up in the attic. I just love the way they look after the makeover that I want to show them off. Isn’t it funny, I stored it up in the attic with no problem before, now with the new look I am hating the thought of putting it back in the attic. ha! Back to the wall grouping. I saw a picture on Instagram that I just loved and wanted that look in my house. I priced around mirrors and just wasn’t willing to pay that much for them. I remember that my daughter had her old dresser mirror up in her attic and asked her if I could have it. Can you tell that she is going to be like me and use her attic for a storage unit?
Here is what the mirror looked like when I brought it home.
I removed the braces off the bottom where they attach to the dresser. They were just screwed on. I placed two wall brackets on the back of the frame to hang on the wall. I primed and painted, then distressed it. That was the hardest part, I tend to be light on the distressing. I knew I wanted a deep distressed look so I kept sanding until I thought I ruined it. That was the look I was aiming for.
Now the shelf. I found two corbels and two post toppers at the Habitat for $4.00. They were just sitting there unfinished and in mint condition. I snatched those up. Went to Lowe’s and found a scrap piece of wood for $3.00. Don’t know if you know this or not, but you could go to Lowe’s or Home Depot in the lumber section where they cut the wood for you. With their scrap pieces they put on clearance. They had a piece the size I needed to make the shelf. I had to cut a little off of it. I stained the pieces, painted them and then distressed them. I put the corbels in the back part of the board and the post toppers in front of the corbels. I used iron grip adhesive instead of nailing them. I used this when I trimmed out our bathroom contractor’s mirror. I knew that it would be secure enough for the shelf.
I wished I would of placed the shelf a little lower under the mirror. I place anchors in the wall to hold the shelf in place so there is no moving them down without doing patch work. BUT…..the more I look at it……..how many of you want to bet that I will be moving it down a bit? ha!
I love the little touch of distressed wood. It works nicely with the white painted and stained furniture.
For just a few hours painting and making the shelf this was a huge statement for my wall. I would have to say this was an A+ DIY. Mirror free, paint on hand – wood supply $7 – glue on hand……what a big bang for $7 and a little labor.
