RUG MAKEOVER – SUCCESS OR FLOP?

Finishing all the small jobs this week wasn’t as fun as doing the larger jobs.  I wonder why?  This is week 4 of the $100 Room Challenge  hosted by Erin over at Lemons, Lavender and Laundry.   This week I thought I would share what we have been working on since the last time I shared the room with you.   Next week will be the big reveal.  So exciting!  To give you a reminder of what our entryway looked like on Week 1.

Hey there, welcome to week 4 of the entryway makeover.  If you are just joining me on the challenge you can click on my progress below.

Before I get to my rug makeover I want to share what else I have been doing in the room during Week 4. One, changing out the light switches and plug-in from almond to white.  The existing plates didn’t look so pretty against the white walls, can’t believe I kept them almond when I painted the faux shiplap. 🙁

Mr. Tip was very kind to do the change outs for me.  We shopped Home Depot for all the new switches, plugin and plates.

Patting my back still on how well my trimming turned out around the switches.

Next I tackled our coat closet, for a closet we hardly use it sure stays messy.  I decided to clean out the closet and get rid of some coats we don’t wear.  Didn’t do anything exciting in the closet just straightened it up.

I also added some heavy duty coat hooks to the wall.  There are so many different ways to add coat hooks so I was stumped.  I decided to use only 5 of the 6 hooks I purchased, placing three centered on the first horizontal board and 2 on the second board.

OK, now to the rug.   Instead of going out and buying a rug, I decided to take the rug that was in the room and dress it up with a design and color.  I had this idea of using RIT dye and painting the dye onto the rug.  I went to Walmart to purchase the dye.  Came home all geared up to start on the rug.  I found a design I wanted for the rug, using painters tape I taped off the design.  Wasn’t so hard, I just took a piece of cardboard and taped around the cut out.

Using a spray bottle I sprayed the rug to get it wet.  I applied the RIT dye onto the rug with a stiff brush.  Rubbing it in to make sure all the fibers were covered.

I made sure I covered the edges, as well.

Once I had the exposed rug all painted I removed the tape.

It looks amazing and exactly how I wanted it to look.  Super!

Applying some heat to the painted area with my heat gun.  Making sure each section got heat to it.

I let it set over night.  I took it outside and turned it upside down to spray the rug with a garden hose to remove all the excess dye.  It isn’t a type of rug you can place in the washing machine.  I clamped it to my saw horses and started rinsing it down with cold water.  My thought was, if it was upside down the dye would run right off and not seep onto the undyed part.  Wasn’t that smart thinking?

I continued to spray the rug with water until the water was running off clear. I was anxious to turn the rug over to see the results…

WAIT FOR IT…….

UGH!  All the work of taping and painting!   Oh well, live and learn, right?  What I could do is dye the whole rug a solid color, but I decided to just let it dry and give it to our neighbor, he is always needing carpet to use in his workshop.

Let’s take a look at the budget so far…

  • Coat hooks – $13.99 package of 6
  • Light switches, plug-in and plates $6.61
  • Organized and clean closet – $0
  • Week 1 – goals = $0
  • Week 2 – installed board and batten = $29.30
  • Week 3 – built a custom bench = $39.99

Total expense so far = $89.89

    1. Thank you Amy! Yeah I know who would of thought it wouldn’t turn out by looking at the rug prior to rinsing it off. I am so happy how the room turned out even with the flop of my rug.

  1. SHOOT! Life of a DIYer. Win some. Lose some. It really was a great idea, and after pulling the tape off, it looked amazing! I am positive this space is still going to look amazing for the reveal… even if the rug didn’t make it. Can’t wait for Wednesday!

    1. I also thought it was going to work and loved how the rug looked before the rinsing. 🙂 You are so right, life of a DIYer. I am excited to see everyone’s rooms.

    1. I was so bummed because prior to rinsing the rug it was exactly how I wanted it to look. Figuring it must had some type of coating or Scott guard on it. Oh well…I did the same thing to a loveseat once before and it worked perfectly. Thanks Jackie.

  2. Oh Terrie, I’m so sorry… I hate it when a project doesn’t turn out as planned. But we’ve all been there and feel your pain. It was so pretty too…. The foyer is looking so good!!! I can’t wait to see your reveal.

    1. It was really was Leen, but I did the same thing several years ago to a loveseat and it worked perfectly. All I can think of is the rug must of had a coating on it. I did find something else to put down on my floor under budget. Will share that soon.

  3. Oh no! Your rug looked so good! But that’s how DIY goes a lot of times – lots of fails behind the successes. And our house is also cursed with all almond light switches and outlets. Eventually they will all be switched out to white, it’s just such a huge job for a whole house! Excited to see your finished space next week!

    1. Carrie, I know having almond switches is a downer and very expensive to do the whole house all at once. It must of been the going thing back in the 80s. ha!

The rug did look so good until I hit water on it. I have done this before and it worked fine, I guess their was a coating on the rug fibers. Scotch guard or something. I thought I would go ahead and share that things always don’t work out the way we want them too.

I can’t wait until the reveal day either. Love seeing all the before and afters in the challenge.

    1. I know. I did this with a loveseat for our daughter and it worked, but I guess with the rug it must of had some type of coating on it. Oh well, I was just going to use it for the Fall season. I ordered a rug to match the dining room rug so all is good! Thanks Pam!

    1. Sometimes things just doesn’t work out. I done the same technique on a loveseat I dyed for our daughter and it worked perfectly. Don’t know why it didn’t work on this, maybe the rug fiber is not absorbable. Thanks Cindy!

  4. Your rug looked so cute…until it was bare again! Good idea to “paint” it. I wonder if there are some types of paint that could be used for a job like that. I have seen gals paint upholstery.

    1. Donna I have dyed a loveseat for our daughter’s dorm room (she wanted it purple). I did the same thing and after 4 years it still was purple. Don’t know what the problem was, maybe the fiber. Oh well, it’s ok I was just going to use it for the Fall season in the foyer. I will be ordering one to match my dining room rug.
