RUSTIC DIY FRAMED OUT MIRROR

Hello everyone, welcome back! Ignore the lady in the mirror. 🙂  Today we are going back into my daughter’s bathroom to frame out her mirror.  If you are just coming over to my blog I will recap what we have done so far.  We painted her cabinets, changed out the handles and light fixtures and did a concrete overlay to the vanity top.  Today, we are going to frame out her mirror with a rustic look and will be adding the faucets.  If you want to check out my post on the updates you can catch up here ⇒Rustic Bathroom Makeover.

Let me show you the mirror we are going to transform.

Like everything in this room, nothing has been easy.  With an older home there can be some obstacle you have to overcome.  Something simple like removing the trim piece would seem easy, right?  Well…of course not.  Whoever framed the mirror, not only did a great job gluing it to the mirror but they glued right over the bracket as well, so we couldn’t remove it off the wall. 🙁  I had to come up with another plan to change the frame without damaging the mirror.  What I decided to do is apply the new wood over the white frame.  Here is how we did that.

The mirror is 9′ X 3′ feet which is a large mirror, don’t you think?  We purchased two 10′ and one 8′ – 1 X 6 pine boards.  We cut the top and bottom board to size.  Double checking our measurements by holding in place the top and bottom boards to take the correct measurements for each side.  My rule, measure twice cut once.

Once we cut the boards it was time to figure out what color we want to stain them.

It was like Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the house that night!  We had gray stain but it was too light, the brown stain was too brown and we didn’t want to paint it.  We had scrap pieces of pine to practice on until we found the right look.  Finally, I painted the board with a steel gray interior latex paint while it was still wet I took a wet cloth and wiped it off.  I guess you can say we used our own method in staining the boards.  After they were dry I gave them two coats of sealer.

We did the front and back of the boards.  The reason we did the back, it will reflect off the mirror.  We wanted to make sure the reflection was of the stain and not the raw pine.

The color was the perfect shade…she loved it….so this mama was happy. 😉

To fill in the gap between the mirror and the new frame we cut 1″X 2″ pine board the same length as each frame piece.

Adding the frame to the mirror; we took the filler piece, applied Power Grab to the back and attach it to the mirror.  (Some how I lost the pictures of this step)

I took the Power Grab and applied a line to the bottom of the existing frame and  a line to the filler trim piece and attached the stained pine to both glued pieces.  We used a level to make sure each piece was on straight.

We glued the top first, the bottom second and then the two sides.  Doing the same process as above.

She loves the look of a Swivel Spout faucet.  I found what she wanted on Amazon.

Since we had to use a filler piece I wanted to caulk the spaces between the two boards.  I took paintable caulk and applied in all the gaps.

I will share a cool trick I learned, to spread the caulk use alcohol and your finger.  By using the alcohol it keeps the caulk wet while you form it into your area.

You know me and how I like to make my own shades of color, I took steel gray paint and some brown paint and mix up a color to match the boards.  After the caulk dried I painted over the white caulk.

I purchased a package of 4 L-shaped wall brackets to add to each corner of the frame.  I spray painted with Rust-oleum bronze hammered spray paint.

To spray the top of the screws, I poked the screws into a box, this kept the screws in place while painting.

I attached the L brackets to each corner.  We didn’t miter the corners so the brackets can not be centered with the two boards, we placed them in the center of each corner.

If only we could of removed the white frame we would of had less work installing the frame.  BUT….like we have been saying from day one…… It is what it is!   All in all we love how it is turning out.
