Hey there! It’s the Thrift Store Challenge today! I am joining 6 other friends to share our thrift store finds or repurposing something we have sitting around our home today. I will share all of my friend’s blog links at the bottom of my page. Thanks to Tara with Stilettos and Shiplap for hosting this month’s challenge.

I have been way too busy to stop and go shopping any where, but I really would love a shelf above the toilet in our Master bathroom. Let’s just say I went out shopping in our shed for wood to build a shelf. Do your remember me telling you our neighbors tore down their shed giving me whatever the lumber from it I wanted? Well here is only half of it !!

I found two pieces that would work nicely for the type of shelf I want to make. Plus, I grabbed two of my corbels I had and my towel rack that was up on the wall before I took it down. I asked Mr. Tip real nice like if he would cut the boards for me. AND he did ! 🙂
Before I start the tutorial on making this simple towel bar shelf here are the items I am using.
- 1 x 12 x 30 piece of wood
- 1 x 6 x 30 piece of wood
- 2 wooden corbels
- 1 wall towel bar
- wood screws
- primer and paint or stain
Cutting the boards the size I want my shelf to be.
- I want my shelf to be 30 inches long. We cut both boards 30 inches in length.
- My corbels were a little longer than the 6 inch board so I had Mr. Tip cut the back off to make it 6 inches.
- I wiped all the boards down with mineral spirits. Taking my electric sander, I sanded all the boards and corbels.
- I primed and painted all the pieces, painting with Benjamin Moore, Edgecomb Gray.
Now that all the pieces are painted it’s time to build my shelf.
- Taking my towel bar and the 1 x 12 x 30 board. I centered my towel bar at the bottom of the board marking each end.
- Taking the wall mount from the towel bar attaching both to the board at the mark.
- Here are the steps we took to attach the corbels. 1. Place the corbels 1 inch from the edge. 2. Making sure they are evenly placed. 3. I traced around the back of the corbels to give us a visual where to drill the pilot holes. 4. Drill a pilot hole for each screw. 5. Take wood screws and attach the corbels to the board.
- Attach the 1 x 6 x 30 board to the top of the corbels with two wood screws. I painted my screws so they are not noticeable.
- Attaching wall brackets to the back of the shelf.
That’s it. My shelf is finished and this cost me nothing but a little work. I had everything on hand to make this shelf. I will be sharing the full picture of my towel bar shelf on Wednesday for the $100 Room Challenge. I hope you come back to view our Master Bathroom REVEAL!!!

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂

Thank you Jodi. I love zero dollar decor. 🙂 I love shopping at Thrift stores but this month I have a lot going on at home and didn’t get a chance to shop. Love hopping with you on this challenge!
Terrie this is such a cute project. Love the corbels you added and I can only imagine that it really adds a great touch to your master bathroom. I can’t wait to see the full reveal! How great is it that you got all that free wood?
I was like a child in a candy store. I am loving being able to just go into the shed and get what I need. Finding straight pieces was a little difficult but even a little bowed made a nice shelf for our room. Thanks for hosting this month’s challenge. Have a great week.
Another great DIY my friend. Loving the corbels you added. They gave this character and added a nice touch.
You’re going to need a long nap after your challenges are finished 😘
Have a great day my friend
