THRIFT STORE MAKEOVER

Hello everyone and welcome back to another Thrift Store Challenge!  This month I have teamed up with 5 other thrifters, Tara, Emily, Jordan, Carolyn and Maren.  I will post the links to their blogs at the end of my page.  The rules were simple–take your item(s) from a thrift store and transform them into a cozy and warm home decor.  Using only thrift store items.  There was no budget on this challenge just make it budget friendly, so we let our creative juices flow!

For my project I found a peg shelf several years ago at the Habitat for $5.00.  Never really got around working with it until my daughter said she needed something to hang her bathroom towels on.   I told her I had the perfect something.  When I texted her the photo of the shelf, I got this reply, “LOL….ummmm what does the end result look like?”

What do you think?  Would you laugh if I told you I was going to put this shelf in your bathroom?  Probably.  Hold on…let me share with you what I did to make this thrift store shelf turn into a rustic shelf with hooks. 🙂

Not that I would even think of putting this shelf, as is, in her bathroom.  I am going to give it a complete makeover.

She has a large wall in her bathroom and it needs some warming up.  It is a narrow room so we can’t sit anything there, I thought a shelf with hooks would be a perfect thing to hang her robe and towels on.  I hope she likes it!

Here is what I did to make this shelf more of what she wanted.

I removed the pegs off the shelf.

The shelf is so old that I pull the pegs off without any problems or tools.

Taking a black sharpie and a ruler I am drawing a line around the side trim piece to give me a guide where the bottom of the peg bar is.  I did that on both sides.

Taking a hammer I tapped the sides off.

I gently wiggled the shelf off of the back.

Now to remove the nails.

I am going to cut the little design and hearts off the back of the shelf.  I measured and made a straight line for my guide.

I removed the wall hanging brackets from the back.  I’m keeping them to add back on when I get done, so I was really gentle removing the brackets.

I took the side pieces and the back and I (yes I did) cut at the lines with a circular saw.

OK I have typed and retyped this part…there is no easy way to explain what I did but here goes.  I am turning the shelf’s back around.  I am using the back as the front and the front as the back…did this make any sense to you?

Making a line where the shelf will be place.  The reason why I am drawing a line is because this will give me a pattern to make pilot holes.

Once I made the line,  I used a drill and made three pilot holes in the center between the edge and my line.  One in the center and one on each side.

I placed the screws in the back just barely sticking out on the other side.  I am using Power Grab because I didn’t have wood glue.  I made a line of glue and screwed the shelf into place.

I did the very same steps to the side pieces.

The shelf is starting to look like it’s in the 21st century now. 🙂

I had some brass coat hooks from an old rack that I saved.  I spray painted the hooks with Rust-eloum bronze spray paint.

To measure out the placements of the 5 hooks.  I measured the length from side to side finding the center and placing a mark.  I measured 4 inches from the side and marked a dot.  I measured from the center mark to the end mark and found the center of those two and placed a mark there.  I did that to the other side.

Marked the holes on the hooks, drilled and added the hooks to the shelf.

I like it just like this, but when I texted my daughter the picture she said more of a white rustic color.  Took off the hooks and gave the wood some color.  I used white, black and brown and kept painting until I mastered the look.

The lighting makes it look more gray and white.

She liked the color, so I sealed and attached the hooks to the shelf AGAIN!

Her bathroom is not ready to put this shelf up just yet to share where it will actually go, I decided to share the shelf with you on my wall for now.

What do you think?  When thrift store shopping don’t look at an item for what it is but what it could be!  I hope you enjoyed my blog today and it gave you some inspiration to go to your local thrift store and find something not so pretty and make it fit your style.  For only $5.00 and some time…OK maybe 5 hours, 😉 I created something our daughter can hang a towel or robe.

    1. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until I started! Isn’t it funny how you just go with it at the time. I love how it turned out and looks in my daughter’s bathroom.

Thank you for your prayers Susan. They are surely needed.

    1. Thank you Emily! It is funny that I never thought about doing this before with the shelf. I had it a couple years and just didn’t want it the way it looked. When my daughter told me she wanted something to hang towels on it just clicked. Funny how that happens!

    1. Thank you Jordan. It is crazy how you look at something one day and have no idea what you want to do with it and another day know exactly what you want to do. Crazy! I enjoyed hopping with you, can’t wait until we do this again!

    1. Thank you Maren! Oh honey, I am always doing something crazy. I had this shelf for years and it just so happen that it worked out the way I wanted. I love how it looks and will look awesome in my daughter’s bathroom.

Thanks for doing the challenge with us, hope you will continue to thrift with us!

  1. Terrie, you have such a great eye to see the potential in things – the transformation is amazing – doesn’t even look like the same shelf! Your daughter is lucky to have such a resourceful mama 🙂

    1. Thank you Carolyn, I really didn’t know what I would do with the shelf when I purchased it, but when my daughter stated she needed something for her towels and didn’t want a towel bar it clicked on how I wanted the shelf to be. I am glad it worked the way I wanted it to.

Enjoyed working on the challenge with you. Hopefully we will have many more to conquer. 🙂
