TIPS ON CLEANING YOUR MATTRESS

Hi there!  Can you believe we are at the middle to the end of January already?  My gosh, I feel like it just started.  I hope all is well and you are staying away from that terrible flu that is going around everywhere!  So far our house has stay clear of it.

As I mentioned in my previous post now that the decorations are put away I like to get my home back in order from the holidays.  I had to get the pantry back in order first.  We are in the kitchen a lot and starring at that mess was too painful.  I am so glad that it is clean and organized.  Now it’s time to head to our guest bedrooms.

I just love having a full house, especially when we have overnight guest for the holidays.  It’s after they leave when the fun stops.  Washing all of the bedding and then placing it back when you are exhausted.   I stripped the beds and washed the bedding, now it is time to get the beds put back together.

Today’s post is about how I freshen up our mattresses and how I style the perfect bed.

Let’s get started!

The bedding has been all washed and ready to be placed back on the bed, but first I want to focus my attention on the mattresses.  I like to clean and turn the mattresses at least twice a year.  I found this article how to clean your mattress by using a baking soda mixture.  Below I will share how to freshen your mattress using this mixture.

What you will need:

  1. box of baking soda (I only used 1/2 box since my mattress has a pillow top and can not be flipped)
  2. 10 – 20 drops of essential oil (your favorite.  I am using lavender)
  3. mason jar
  4. kitchen sifter
  5. rubber gloves
  6. vacuum cleaner with an attachment

It says that the baking soda will soak up any moisture in the mattress and the essential oil gives it a fresh scent.  I don’t know about the moisture but it does have a good smell.

Let’s talk sheets for a minute.

The best tip I can give you, buy a good set of sheets.  A guest bedroom is only going to be used occasionally, but even your guest needs a cozy feeling when crawling under the sheets.

Tip:  When shopping for sheets always look at the thread count.  Look for a set that has a thread count 200 – 400.  I try to get 400 thread count and I like to buy 100% Egyptian.

I just love beautiful bedding and a bed that is all dressed up just makes me happy.  The guest bedrooms are not use very often so I like to keep them styled like they are on displayed.

Now that the mattress is all cleaned let’s start dressing the bed!

I am not an expert on making a beautiful bed, but I wanted to share with you my style and how I make a pretty bed for our home!

I always use a mattress pad on all of our mattresses.  A mattress pad helps to save the mattress from any normal wear and tear.  I like to use a thick mattress pad.

Now that we have the mattress pad on the bed, let’s get the fitted sheet on.  This part is pretty easy just making sure that you pull it tight to remove all the wrinkles.

I like to have the sheets match the bedding and I normally tend to stay with a solid color.

Now comes the part where I am sure you are shaking your head at.  I hate wrinkles!  Even on a bed.  I grab my ironing board and iron for the next couple steps.  With my sheet thread count, they do tend to wrinkle a little more than a lesser count.  There is always Pros and Cons.

I take my ironed flat sheet and spread it over the bed.  I like to put the right side of the sheet toward the mattress.  This way when you turn down your bed or if you dress your bed with your top sheet folded over your quilt or comforter the pretty side will be showing.

On this bed I like to fold my top sheet over my comforter so I will be making sure that I have a little extra sheet at the top.

Add a blanket or quilt.  I like to use a light weight quilt on our guest beds.   I like to make a fold with the blanket, if you don’t make sure you stop the blanket where you want your sheet to fold.

I tuck in the sheets and cover together.

I like to fold the corners in a hospital corner fold.  Here is I do the fold.

First I tuck the end of the bed.

Take the corner of the blanket and sheet and fold it up toward the head of the bed, even with the mattress.

Tuck in the blanket and sheet while holding the corner up.  After tucking in the excess take your other hand and make a diagonal line to the bottom corner.

While holding your finger drop the top corner down and tuck in the excess.

Do that to the other side.

Now I tuck the sides just to the fold of the blanket.

Adding the comforter to the bed.  I make sure that the ends falls just below the mattress.  Fold the comforter and then the sheet.

Can you see why I ironed the top sheet?

I placed the pillows in the ironed pillow cases and placed them first on the bed.

I added euro shames and matching pillow shams to the bed.

Add some throw pillows.

I like to take the corners of the comforter and make a flared pleat.

Adding something to the bed will give it a little character.  I added a texture knitted throw, book and a hydrangea.

The book and hydrangea gives it a little pizzazz.

Here is one more photo of the bed.

Here are the other guest beds and how I dressed them.

I am so happy with how my DIY lap tray turned out.  If you missed my post on how I made the tray you can go HERE.

I placed a pottery jug with some willow branches on top of a book and twine on a spool holder.  Isn’t that just adorable?  I found that a TjMaxx for $4.99.  Couldn’t pass it up.

Now that I have our three guest bedrooms cleaned and put back together from the holidays it’s time to move to another room.
