Happy Mother’s Day to all of my friends out there! Welcome to Decorate and More with Tip! Here on my blog I share how you can decorate your home on a budget. I share budget friendly decorations by creating it from scratch, revamping, re-purposing or giving it a makeover with easy tutorials. I hope I inspire you to create something beautiful for your home. 🙂
Today’s is the 10 on the 10th Blog Hop, I am joining 8 talented bloggers who gets together on the 10th of the month to share our ideas for under $10. This month’s theme is all about upcycling or re-purposing.
I started working on the closet in my craft room-to-be. The first thing I wanted to do after I got everything out of the room was paint the closet. Next was create storage for all of my craft supplies. Instead of putting up the three shelves in the closet like my previous craft closet I decided to use plastic drawer bins. We purchased the drawers when our daughter, Kristin was in college. They served their purpose for her when she was living in the dorm rooms. When she didn’t want them anymore I stored them up in our attic, like everything else. I decided to bring them down to use in the closet.

I took the drawers out of the unit and cleaned everything with Formula 409. Once they were all clean I took them outside to work on them.
I gave each unit two coats of Rust-Oleum spray paint for plastic in the color Gloss Regal Blue. Each unit took about one can of paint. I purchased my paint from Lowe’s for $3.98.
Of course it started to rain. I brought them on our back porch out of the rain to continue to dry.
I have a lot of “stuff” to place inside the drawers which could look pretty sloppy with the clear drawers. I decided to paint the drawer fronts with Rust-Oleum spray paint for plastic in the color Gloss White.
I let everything dry over night. The next day I added the drawers to the unit and placed them in the closet.
I have all my craft supplies organized and placed in the drawers. I love having all my supplies hidden in the drawers. Painting the units gave the appearance of a piece of furniture instead of a plastic unit, don’t you think?
If you have plastic storage bins and don’t like the look try giving them a new look by spray painting the unit. It didn’t take long at all and for under $10 you will have a cute storage unit!
I hope my blog gives you inspiration to tackle a few DIY home décor projects.

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
Hi, I’m dropping over from Patti’s at Pandora’s Box and am loving all the crafty work you ladies are doing. I have very similar storage containers, but I would never have thought of painting them. Yours look soooo much better! I am not very crafty but if I get brave enough I might try this. Lucky you for getting a craft room. I have a “crafting area” for paper crafts but would love a whole room. Maybe then I’d get craftier:) Stay well and if you ever have time drop by my blog to “chat.” cherischatter.blogspot.com
What a great idea! I love how you spray painted them! They look great and the best part is they’re functional!
Thanks Dori. They really look better from the plan white they once were. I love how painting the fronts hide what I put in them.
I’ve always said paint is magical and it truly is! What an awesome makeover you gave those storage bins, Terrie! I love the color and they really do look like a piece of furniture now! Bonus-I could hide all my ‘stuff’ and no one (hubby) would know! 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration girl!
Yes…paint is my best friend! Paint your drawer fronts it helps keep the look crisp and clean. Doesn’t take much paint either. Thanks for stopping over Christine!
What a facelift! They look so much more upscale! Great job.
I think so too Pamela. It looks classy and neater hiding all of the stuff I have in the drawers.
This is such a great idea! I have some of these drawers that I keep my craft stuff in, too. I hate being able to see my “mess” in them. I’m going to have to do this!
I love how the paint hides all the stuff I put in the drawers. You really need to do this. It looks so much nicer.
Terrie, I love this idea. Plastic bin drawers are very practical but not pretty. I would never have thought you could paint them. They did turn out very nice. What a great solution to your need for storage. I bet you’re happy you saved them. Pinned for sure.
Thanks Carol. I was just going to paint the bases but didn’t want to stuff I put in the drawers to been seen. So painting them helped keep things looking tidy. Thanks for pinning!
Love how coordinated your drawers are now! Great idea to repaint these drawers, Terrie!! I love the whole look and it sure does organize your closet. Perfect for hiding everything neatly out of the way. <3
Happy Mother's Day,
Barb 🙂
I love the pop the color gave inside the closet. Painting the fronts make it look nice and tidy. Believe me I have a lot of STUFF tucked inside. Thank you Barbara!
This is such a great makeover. I always had trouble making these cute in my classroom. They were very necessary but not cute. Great job.
Giving them some color made it look nicer but painting the drawer fronts was a must. I don’t want to see all the stuff I had inside. Painting the fronts was a must for sure! Thanks Katie!
What a great idea, Terrie! I have sooo many plastic storage bins, tubs, small stacking containers. They ARE ugly and I’d do the same thing and stick them inside the closet, but the closet is full of other ugly plastic stackable containers… Lol! We put in wire shelving and that helped. I guess our closets in CA were a bit deeper as all of this fit in the other house and it was a 10’x10′ room. Oh, well! I need a bit pretty armoire…! 😉
Will definitely pin to several boards, as always,
Happy Mother’s Day!!!
Barb 🙂
Moving my craft supplies from a walkin closet to a normal size closet was a challenge. The plastic bins works perfectly but I didn’t like the look of them white. After painting the bases I knew that the drawers would have to be painted to hide all the items tucked inside them.
I might have to see some of your tricks, I want so much in my craft I am going to have to find inspiration to organize for small spaces.
Happy Mother’s Day Terrie,
I love your organizational mindset.
My crafting supplies are sort of all over the place and it’s very frustrating.
Great use of storage containers and you really transformed them too!
Thanks Jemma! Honestly, in my other closet I had open shelving and plastic baskets to house all my supplies. It never looked tidy and always got into shambles so when I moved closets I knew I didn’t want the open shelving. The bins worked out so nicely.
Aren’t these great drawers for crafts ? I keep all my paint supplies in them and they are so easy to grab and go. What a fantastic idea to paint them and give them a fresh look! Very clever! And it always seems to sprinkle when I spray paint outdoors, too!!
I love the look of the drawers in the closet vs the shelving with baskets. Makes it all look so much neater. I still could use so many more of them. ha! Yes….either it is raining or too windy this time of the year for paiting.
How clever! We have some of these bins too. I never thought to paint them. They look so much better. Great idea, Terrie! By the way I am jealous of your craft room to be and can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Jodi I finally decided to do it. Probably too late in my years for a craft room but as long as I can enjoy it I will. So many plans running through my head.
I am so happy with the look of the drawer units in the closet. Everything has a place to be tidy and hidden.
Isn’t it wonderful how spray paint can absolutely transform a piece? Your storage containers look fantastic. Happy Mother’s Day!
Ann, you know me if you can’t paint it you don’t need it. ha! I love the look of the units and how neat it keeps my supply closet. Happy Mother’s day to you too!
Terrie I use some of those storage containers too… I painted the base but left the front’s clear and put paper on the inside of the drawers. Which did not work well at all. Over time the paper wore out, so I just removed it. My Type A personality hates seeing the “stuff” I love the idea of painting it to look like furniture! I’m definitely going to try this. It looks so much better not being able to see all the messy stuff. Great idea and it looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see your finished craft room!
Tammy I thought about the paper as you did, but thought about how often I get in and out of them. Plus the fullness of my crafts in the drawer I knew I would be wasting my time with using paper to hide the “stuff”. I love how easy it was to paint the drawers to hide everything to make the closet look nicer. Have a great day!
