WET BAR CLOSET MAKEOVER – CABINETS

Hey there!  Coming to you from our daughter’s living room.  Now that we have the fireplace painted we are working on the other side of the room with the wet bar closet.

Forgive me for the photos.  Lighting was so dark in the closet and with the light on it was too bright, I took the pictures with the light off and had to edit most of the picture since they are all I have of the project. 🙁

Here is what it looked like when we started.

We wanted a wall cabinet in the wet bar area so I went on a hunt to find upper wall cabinets.  I lucked up one day when I went in the Habitat Store and found this upper cabinet unit.

It was missing the other two cabinet doors, I asked if they had them somewhere else?  We searched around and found only one, which was fine because we are going to put a wine rack in the center.  I grabbed it and brought it home.

We removed the iron railing from the top of the cabinet.

We found the studs on the back wall, centered the unit on the wall and attached it with drywall screws.

The unit is not as wide as we would of liked.  We added a piece of board to each side to give an appearance of a wall to wall upper cabinet.

I caulked all the gaps and primed the cabinets to paint.

We couldn’t remove the drawers from the cabinet because the doorway walls, the drawers hit the wall.

We are painting the cabinets the same color as the mantel, Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Powell Gray – CW-665.  If you missed that blog post on the mantel you can check that out PAINTED MANTEL.

The Thrift Store cabinet doors are cathedral style doors and the bottom cabinet are square trim doors.  Houston we have a problem. 🙂  Not really, I took my power saw and cut the panels out of the cabinets. (Yes…everyone, I did this project all by my lonesome).  Just that simple.  Here is how I did it.  As you can see it’s not perfect, but it turned out the best it could for this girl.

  • Took the cabinet and a square making a square pattern at the top above the cathedral arch.

Took a drill and started a pilot hole to place my saw blade into so I cut can cut down one side of the panel.  Once you get one side cut the panel pops out.  It sits into a groove.

To square out the top I will cut on the line that I marked earlier.

Now that I have the panel out I need to cut the back part of the groove so a glass panel will fit in.  I will be using plastic clip arms to hold the glass in.

Sanded all the edges.

You know, if I did this sort of thing a lot and had the right tools it would be a little easier and neater.

Primed and painted the cabinet doors the same as the cabinets.

Lowe’s sells glass panels and will cut it for you.  Lowe’s had a glass panel large enough to cut two pieces for the price of one.  We changed out the cabinet handles to a T bar style.

I am so happy with the $25 thrift store cabinet.  The glass panels was under $15.   We purchased 7 handles and spray painted the old hinges silver.

    1. We had a hard time picking the color for the woods in the room. So happy with the color. Can’t wait to share the backsplash we picked out. Gorgeous!
