IT AMOUNTS TO A CAN OF BEANS – PINTEREST CHALLENGE

Welcome to the May Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by Erlene, My Pinterventures.  Pinterest is a great place for all of us to go and check out home decor, recipes, DIYs, crafts and so much more.  Today I am in a group of talented bloggers sharing our version of some inspiration we found on Pinterest.  To view my previous Pinterest challenges you can catch up PINTEREST CHALLENGES.  Just click to follow me and my pins on Pinterest →PINTEREST ACCOUNT.

For my Pinterest inspiration this month I wanted something for my shelf under the mirror in our kitchen.  If you haven’t see that DIY Mirror wall decor you can go DIY MIRROR SHELF.  I found the perfect little decor piece for the shelf.  The pin I found on Pinterest was from a floral shop called Farmhouse Florals.  You can go check out the site HERE.

Here are the items I used to make my version of the Lavender Farmhouse Arrangement.

  • 1 tall can (I am using an empty can of Bush’s beans)
  • 2 bundles of Wal-mart lavender picks
  • black gingham wired ribbon
  • paint (grey, white, brown and hazelnut)
  • floral wire
  • floral foam
  • scissors
  • a pair of snips
  • paint brush

My tutorial on how I made the arrangement.

  • The Bush’s bean can is the perfect size for the container.  I am not wasteful, I will fix the beans for dinner tonight. 🙂  I removed the label and washed the can well.  I used the snips to bend any sharp edges down into the inside of the can.

Taking Krylon Deep Gray spray paint and painting the can.

  • Once that dried I took out my TRUFFLE and HAZELNUT chalk paint and painted the rim at the top of the can.

  • Once the rim paint dried I applied a good coat of WHITE chalk paint to the can.

  • I took a lightly damp paper towel and gently rubbed the ridges of the can to wipe the white off.   After I wiped off the ridges I still wasn’t happy with how it looked so I apply more gray & white chalk paint to the ridges with a thin tip brush.  As you can tell I didn’t make the lines straight on purpose.

  • Cutting the foam in a circle, smaller than the can.

  • Taking the two bundles of LAVENDER and cutting each stem off the bundle.

  • Sticking the stems into the foam.

  • I made a bow placing it on the side of the floral arrangement.  To make a bow like the one I made below, you can check out my tutorial HERE.

I had all the items on hand so this cost me zero dollars.  I am loving how this turned out.

  1. I love a good under $10, quick project! My favorite part is the bow – I’m a sucker for a big puffy bow and for black and white prints!

  2. I love how you used the paint to make the can look aged. It turned out really well and the way you used the gray paint makes the white part stand out. I’ll have to try this technique after we eat some of the beans in our pantry 🙂 Pinned.

    1. Thank you Erlene. I like how the can turned out. Love the lavender with the ribbon. It all came together nicely. Thanks for hosting the blog hop. I have a lot of fun joining your blog hop each month.

  3. I can’t believe it’s a metal can. It looks amazing, like an old tin. I really like the bow and the flowers. It’s beautiful- I need to make this for my kitchen.

    1. Thank you Jenny. So happy you stopped by. Bows make anything look pretty don’t they? I hope you make one for yourself and let me know when you do I would love to see how yours turns out.

  4. Love that you are finding a way to reuse-repurpose tin cans. Would be perfect to swap out the lavendar to fit the seasons. I can see poinsettias with the buffalo plaid…perfect for Christmas. Am adding to my craft board.

    1. You are so right Kelli. Changing out the flowers great idea. Thanks for stopping by. Can’t wait to do another challenge with you!

    1. Thank you so much Beverly! I love using inexpensive items to make home decor. Best way to save money. Thank you so much for stopping by.

    1. Thank you so much Maria! The title fits the whole project. 🙂 So happy you pinned my DIY, hope you try to make one for yourself.

  5. Terri this is amazing and if anyone saw this they would never know you used a can of beans. By the way, if I come to visit I enjoy Bush’s grilling beans.

Don’t you love doing a wet rub with chalk paint. Love how this looks and vintage.

Been busy finishing small painting projects around the house.

Wish I was able to make those bows by the way. I used to and now I have forgotten how over the years.

    Enjoy

    Cindy

    1. Cindy, You are so sweet, thank you. Check my tutorial out on how to make the bow, maybe that will bring back your memory. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Your project came out great! As you saw, I made a similar craft, using cardboard. It’s kind of neat how much you can improve some lowly recycled items with just a little paint and a lot of imagination.
Also – really like how your styled yours!
