Last week Tammy, Patina and Paint and I shared our plans for our half bathroom, this week we are sharing the progress we made so far.  Welcome Teresa, Through a Vintage Door, she is joining the series with her plans of their half bath!

For the cabinet I am sharing how I removed the orange from the cabinet.

I am working on the vanity cabinet; the cabinet is a bit too orange.  Doing some research I found using common household bleach will do the trick!  That will work for me, budget friendly.

How to bleach wood

First thing I did was remove the two doors and took out the two drawers.

Taking my battery-operated sander I gave it a good sanding with 80 grit sandpaper.  I also removed the hardware from the doors and drawers to give them a sanding as well.

I removed as much of the stain as I could, what I couldn’t reach with the sander, I sanded parts by hand.  Vacuum all the dust and wipe the cabinet with a tacky cloth to remove any dust.

I added some household bleach in a plastic bucket.  Normally, you would bleach your piece outside, since I am working on a vanity which can’t be move outside and the room has no ventilation, I wore a N95 mask and had a floor fan forcing the fumes to go out of the room.

Brush the bleach with a paint brush making sure to evenly spread the bleach.

Let that sit for 4 hours or until it is dry.  I gave 2 more coats of bleach letting sit each time.

Not quite done with the sanding yet, after the bleaching is dry give the pieces one more sanding with 120 grit sandpaper.  Vacuum dust and wipe again with a tacky cloth.

To stop the activation of the bleach, use a mixture of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water, wiping down each piece.

Once it dries completely, seal with a wax sealer.  If you use a topcoat, I have read it will darken your wood.  Before I seal my cabinet, I am going to do more searching for the look I want.  Come back for the reveal when I share the finish look!!
