HOW TO CREATE AN ASYMMETRICAL CHRISTMAS MANTEL

This year I am trying something different in the Family room, I didn’t place our Christmas tree near the fireplace.  This means I don’t have to move furniture to other parts of our home.

If you have followed my 2020 Christmas Decorate with Me series you know I have had my garland up on my mantel for 2 weeks now.  I tried several different ways to style my garland and nothing was looking right.  On my mantel I created an asymmetrical look with the decorations.  Starting with the garland I placed it to one side on the mantle, leaving about 24 inches bare.

To make my garland look thicker I layered two types of garland weaving the two together forming one full garland and added lights.

I started out adding a large bow using two different type of ribbon.  To view the tutorial on how I make a bow you can click here HOW I MAKE A LOOP BOW.

I gathered a couple larger ornaments to place on the mantel.   To paint the ornament I removed the cap and gave them two coats of spray paint.

To add some texture to my mantel I am layering ribbons and wooden beads below the garland.  I started with a red and white checked ribbon twisting and draping it a little.

Using a piece of stem in the garland I tied up the ribbon in the center of the mantel, which created a short and long droop in the ribbon.

I added another ribbon and red wooden bead garland the same way.  The top ribbon I draped a little tighter so the back ribbon will be seen as well.  The beads I draped to hang below the two ribbons.

Giving the green garland some color I added some picks by tucking them into the garland.

Adding more color to the garland I am using 4 different size ornaments.  I placed one in the center of the mantle where I tucked in the ribbons.

I connect the other three ornaments to the corner of the mantel next to the bow.

To bring color to the wall of the mantel I added my DIY Joy banner garland to the window.  I used two clear thumb tacks to hold the banner in place.  To see the tutorial I shared yesterday on the blog you can click here DIY JOY BANNER GARLAND.

I added three trees surrounding a lantern on the mantel to keep the look of the mantel balanced.

On the hearth I added a lantern and three trees on top of my DIY lap tray the same side as the bow and ornaments.  Underneath the tray I added a basket of greenery and an ornament on a bed of greenery.  To view the tutorial for the lap tray you can click here DIY LAP TRAY.

Do you see the one small touch I added to the tree?  A message from Heaven!

I changed out the material on the trees, the bottom of the trees were covered with burlap, I thought the red polka dots would be a fun touch.

To the other side of the hearth I added a 3 foot bare tree.  To keep movement to the eye, I placed the bow with long tails to bring your eyes down to the hearth I placed the tree to bring your eyes back up to the mantel.

Here’s the view walking into the Family room from the kitchen.
