DIY DROP CLOTH TABLE RUNNER

Hello everyone!

Did you happen to notice the table runner I had on the table that I shared with you on Tuesday’s blog?  If you missed that you can go HERE and take a look at the runner I am referring to.  I love the table runner I made and wanted to share it with you today.

Do you remember the burlap runner I shared with you the first part of the year?  If you want to check out that DIY you can click HERE. The one I am going to share with you today is very easy, but I did use my sewing machine.  No fancy stitches, just a straight stitch and a basic zigzag stitch.

Have you seen the latest table runner that everyone is styling on Pinterest and Instagram?  They are made out of jute, burlap, drop cloth and even grain sacks.  I found one that is inexpensive and has different color options HERE on Amazon, for those that would like to buy one instead of making one.

Let’s get started!

I had some extra drop cloth material from my patio curtains I made last year.  I cut a strip 55″ x 14″.

HERE is an inexpensive dropcloth you could purchase to make your own, actually a couple of runners.

I am going to fray the sides of the runner.  It is very much like how I frayed the burlap runner.  Take threads and start unraveling.  I unraveled about a half inch.

Keep pulling the threads until you get to the other end.  As long as you cut an even line your fringe should be pretty even.

Do the above steps to the other side.

For the ends and the fray sides we will need to pull out the sewing machine.  Adjust your sewing machine to a smaller zigzag stitch.  I placed mine in the middle of the straight and zigzag stitch on my machine’s stitch selection.

Stitching a zigzag stitch close to the fray ends will keep the rest of the threads from unraveling.

At the ends;  Taking the rough ends using the ruler measuring 1/2 inch and fold over, folding it over one more time and pinning.  I did this to create a hem at the end of the runner.

I did that to both ends.

I adjusted my sewing machine back to regular straight stitch.  Stitching three seams on the folded edge.

After the first sem I switched thread because I didn’t like the yellow.  Make sure you use a thread that coordinates with your color palette. 🙁  I show boo-boos and all!

Now we have our runner, lets make the design.

I pulled out my ruler, painters tape and pencil.

I am going to tape three sections for my runner.  A larger center section and two thinner sections.

I need to find the center of the runner.  I marked the center, taking the ruler and centering my ruler on the mark.  I used a pen and now I wished I didn’t.  *Use a pencil*.  I marked each side of the ruler.

Tape each line off with the painter’s tape.

I picked up a paint roller kit from the Dollar Tree and my pink chalk paint and started painting.

HERE is the paint roller kit if you are interested.  It is a great little kit for the price.

I started rolling on the paint making sure I didn’t roll past the tape.  I didn’t put a lot of paint on the roller I didn’t want the paint to seep under the tape.

I removed the tape and let dry for an hour.

I thought the paint would cover the ink mark, but nope…..should of used the pencil. UGH!

When this dries I measured 1/2 inch away from the pink and marked a line on each side of the center pink strip.

After marking the first line I taped and measured another 1/2 inch marked and taped.

I am using a makeup sponge to paint the two sections.

I just dabbed the paint onto the strips.

Remove the tape and let dry several hours.

I sanded the painted area and then applied miniwax.

I let the wax dry over night.  It was a little process to make this but BOY was it worth it.  I really like how it looks on my table.

It’s not perfect but it is an original.   I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here is my table styled with the drop cloth runner.
