DIY RUSTIC THREE TIERED TRAY

Hello!  Welcome back to Decorate and More with Tip.  I am here to share my tips on how to decorate on a budget.  Today I am sharing another tray DIY.  On a previous blog I shared how I took Dollar Tree items and made a double tiered tray and on another blog the basic tips on styling a tiered tray.  I love using all sorts of trays when decorating our home.  Here are the tutorials for you to review ⇒  DOLLAR TREE DOUBLE TIERED TRAY TUTORIAL and BASIC WAY TO STYLE A TIERED TRAY.  To see all my DIY Tray tutorials ⇒ DIY TRAY TUTORIALS.

My sweet husband scheduled insulation to be blown into our attic this coming Friday. 🙁  That means I have to remove ALL, yes you read it right, all my “stuff” up in the attic before Friday!  While I was up there I saw two of my trays just sitting there one inside of the other.  It gave me an idea for a DIY.  So, instead of boxing everything up I started looking for items I could use.  Do you remember when I found a table on the side of the road?  I shared the whole thing on my stories.  I didn’t keep the table but I did keep the legs of the table.  I grabbed those and a shadow box frame as well as the two trays, down from the attic I went with my items in hand to make a 3 tiered tray!

Here are the items I am going to use

Two different size trays and a wooden shadow box frame.  I will use the frame for the top tray.  It was the perfect size and it was made out of wood.

I will only use a couple of the table legs for this DIY.  Keeping the rest for a future DIY. 🙂

I picked up this handle pull from Hobby Lobby to add to the top of my tray.

I will be using some wood glue, a nail gun, a circular saw and a drill for this DIY.

I had Mr. Tip cut 2 of the table legs to the length I needed and cut 4 ends to use as legs for my tray.  I am using one leg as is.

Taking the 4 little pieces and a nail gun, I added the 4 pieces to my larger tray.  Nailing inside of the tray to secure the legs on the bottom.

I used a drill bit a little larger than the screw to drill a hole in the center of the tray.

  • I measured to find the center of the tray
  • placed a mark
  • drilled a hole at the mark

I placed the screw inside the drilled hole and used a bolt to secure the leg on tightly.

Taking the second size tray and drilling a hole the same way.  Placed it on top making sure the screw goes through the drilled hole.

Since we had to cut the next leg for the second support piece, I drilled a pilot hole on the top of the table leg to allow the screw to thread easily.  I used a drill bit smaller than the screw.

Screwing it down into the bottom support.  I have to drill a pilot hole on top of the support as well.

For the top tray, I am using a wooden shadow box frame.  Taking the frame apart removing the glass and side panels, I won’t be using those.  I placed wood glue around the lip of the frame and placing the back of the frame inside creating a little tray.

I drilled a hole in the center of the shadow box.   Placed another piece of a table leg to the top.  I drilled another pilot hole to add the handle.

Taking it all apart to paint.  I gave it one good coat of Waverly truffle chalk paint.

To create a rustic weathered look I dry brush some Waverly white chalk paint onto the pieces.  You can check how I do a dry brushing in a previous tutorial.  DRY BRUSHING TUTORIAL.

I put the tiered tray all back together.  I love using the table legs because they had screws so it can be interchangeable, from a three tiered tray…

to a double tiered tray…

or to a single tray.  I can take it apart without any trouble.

This tray is very sturdy and it’s huge y’all.  I LOVE IT!!

Next time you run into a thrift store or stop at a yard sale check out trays or anything that has three different sizes, grab them up….you can make a tiered tray like mine.  Pin on your Pinterest board to share with your friends.

  1. I just found your blog. Sadly, I noted it has been inactive for a few years. Anyway, I enjoyed the tips I found. God bless.

  2. I loved your 3 level tiered tray!! Also, refreshing to see you have original oak kitchen cabinets like I do. I will never paint my blemish-free cabinets. White cabinets are overrated! Great decor ideas.

    1. I am not painting mine as well, although I have had so many people tell me I should. I am sure it’s because they aren’t “in style” but I love them so it doesn’t matter. 🙂 Thanks Anna!

    1. It all just happened to work perfectly. I am thinking maybe to add all my craft paints that won’t fit on my ladder shelf. I have many bottles that are in a toolbox that is hard to grab quickly. I might use the tray for my paints or maybe not. ha! Thanks for stopping by.

  3. How lucky were you my friend to find three different sized trays that were perfect together! I just love this DIY and your tutorial rocked! Pinning for sure! Now I just need to find three trays! LOL! Thanks for sharing!

    1. You know Christine. I have had these trays for years. They use to sit on beds for decor. I placed them up in the attic. I have 2 double tiered trays but thought a three tiered tray would be nice that I can sit larger items in. I needed a third one, which the frame was the perfect shape. I am so happy how this all turned out. Now to decorate my tray. Hope you find your trays or something that can be used instead of trays.

      1. Terrie,

Wow, this turned out fantastic! Does your brain ever turn off?

I love the color too and the dry brushing. This looks big and would cost money to buy.

        Great job👏👏

        Cindy
