DIY SUMMER GARDEN FLAG

Are you ready for summer?  Do you need a summer garden flag?  I have just the DIY for you.  I also have a garden flag for my friends that want to buy one instead of doing this DIY.  I aim to please. 🙂

I have to admit, since I have been blogging I’m a little addicted to making things instead of buying them and garden flags are one of those things.  If you haven’t seen my tutorials on my garden flags, you can go over and check them out by clicking ⇒  DIY GARDEN FLAGS.

For my friends who love my flag, but doesn’t want to make one.  Here is one similar you can purchase.  SUMMER GARDEN FLAG

But, for my friends who wants to make one with me, here are the supplies you need:

  • Two – 13 inch x 19 inch drop cloth fabric or burlap
  • pretty wire ribbon
  • piece of paper (for the template)
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • sewing machine or fabric glue
  • straight pins
  • acrylic paints
  • paint brushes
  • letter stencil
  • Medium Rick Rack trim
  • clear spray paint

Making the watermelon pattern

I used a piece of copy paper.  Placing it at the landscape position.  Measure out 5 inches all the way across the page.  Make a line.

You can use a compass tool to make a 10 inch half circle or you can do what I did and used a 10 inch bowl. 🙂  Placing it on the paper making the edge of the bowl on the line.

Cut out the half circle.

I am making my flag double sided, I will be making two  panels.  I found the center of both pieces of drop cloth and measured 5 inches from the bottom placing a mark.

Drawing around the pattern with my pencil.

I outlined my half circle with a green sharpie.

Making a smaller half circle I measured 1 inch from the edge of my pattern.

Placing the top of the template to the top of the half circle line on the drop cloth.  Drawing around the smaller half circle.

Taking a pink sharpie and outlining the inner line.

Free hand 5 seed shapes to the inner half circle.

Taking my ruler and pencil marking two more lines in between the pink and green.  I made a ½ inch from the pink line and another ¼ inch.  I outlined my pencil mark with a green sharpie.

Now let’s start painting!

I am using Waverly Inspirations Super Premium Semi-Gloss Acrylic Paint in the colors of white, black, fuchsia, grass and kelly green.

Inner half circle – FUCHSIA

Seed shapes – INK

The first section  –  WHITE

Next section – GRASS

The outer half circle – KELLY

I am using a letter stencil I purchased at Walmart, FolkArt 7″ x 10″ Nautical Stencil Value Pack, 3 Count.  Stenciled the words SWEET SUMMERTIME in FUCHSIA.

I wish I would of used larger lettering.  Oh well maybe next time.  I outlined the letters with a green sharpie.

After the paint dried I free handed little ants to the top of the watermelon.  I started out with three dots adding lines for the legs and feelers.

MAKING THE FLAG

Place the two drop clothes together with pattern facing each other.

Measure down from each top corner the width of your ribbon plus ½ inch extra and place a mark.  Mine is 1 ½ inch ribbon so I measured 2 inches from the top down making a mark.

Pin the bottom and both sides from the mark sewing a basic stitch.  DO NOT sew above the mark section.  Using the top opening turn the flag right-side out.  I pressed my flag to get all the wrinkles out.

Cut two 14 inch pieces of ribbon.

Make a hem at the top edge of your flag; turning ½ inch and sew a basic stitch to both top panels.

Taking both ribbons pinning it to the top of both panels.

The part of the top that we left opened.  Fold over the ribbon and the drop cloth to make a hem.  Pin and sew.

Sew a basic stitch to the top and bottom of the ribbon this will close the flags opening.  You just created your pocket.

I took the trim piece, pinning it on both sides and bottom of the flag.  Do a basic straight stitch making sure to stitched both trim pieces.

I made a simple bow and hand stitched it onto the corner of each side.

Last step, to keep the paint from running when it gets wet I sprayed a coat of RUST-OLEUM CLEAR SPRAY PAINT all over the flag.

Let dry for at least 12 hours before placing it out in your garden.

I know this seems like a long process.  Once you get started it really doesn’t seem that long at all.
