DOLLAR TREE WALL TAG MAKEOVER

Hey there! Today I am going to share what I did with two wall tags I purchased from Dollar Tree.  Before I get to my DIY I need to mention this is our monthly Pinterest Challenge, the challenge is hosted by Erlene with My Pinterventures. Pinterest is a great place for all of us to go and check out home décor, recipes, DIYs, crafts and so much more. Today I am in a group of talented bloggers sharing our version of some inspiration we found on Pinterest. I honestly saw so many great inspiration on using large wooden wall tags on Pinterest, but the one I really liked was from Birch Lane.  Here is the one I am talking about ⇒ CHRISTMAS WALL TAG DECOR.

I picked up two of Dollar Tree wall tags to create my version of their wall tags.

In order to paint the two tags I need to sand off all the glitter from the front.  I took 120 grit sandpaper and sanded the front of the tags until all the glitter was removed.

Once both were sanded smooth I wiped them down with a damp cloth.

I am using Christmas green craft paint to paint both of my wall tags.  It took three coats.

I printed out Merry Christmas on Word to use on my tags.  I shared how I traced print outs on a previous blog.  I added the word Merry on one and Christmas on the other.  If you haven’t seen how I trace words onto my items you can check out the tutorial here ⇒ TRACE OFF LETTERS

Using white craft paint to fill in the letters.

To connect the tags I am using Dollar Trees nautical rope.  Here is the steps I did to connect the tags.

  1. unraveled the rope to a single rope
  2. taped the ends to stop from fraying
  3. cute the rope to the length I wanted
  4. thread through both holes in the tags
  5. make a large knot to keep the rope threaded

This is what it looks like.

To overlap the tags I used hot glue to the corner and glued both together.  I added hot glue to the seam to give it a little more strength.

I wanted my tags to have a swag instead of just a bow.  I grabbed two Christmas picks, one Christmas eucalyptus bundles, and floral wire.

Taking the two picks bending and connecting them together with floral wire.

Using the eucalyptus bundle I cut it off the stem and placed in the swag.

To connect the swag to the wall tags I tied the rope to make a loop.  I used floral wire and attached the swag to the knot leaving the loop free.

I didn’t like how crisp the tags looked so I added some black dry brushing to the tags.

Applied one coat of Minwax to seal the tags.  Added a bow to the middle of the swag.  To see how I made my bow you can check out the video tutorial in my stories on Facebook or Instagram.

I love how fun this was to make and how inexpensive it was.  It is looking so cute on my bifold door makeover.  If you missed the blog on how I made over a thrift store bifold door you can go over and read here ⇒ BIFOLD MAKEOVER.

    1. Thanks Jenny. I have been eyeing the ones at Birch Lane but the cost just kept me from buying them. When I saw the wall tags at Dollar Tree that gave me the push to make a swag from those.

    1. I didn’t know they had those wall tags. It was perfect timing because I wanted to make those wall tags I have been eyeing. YES…I always love any type of DIYs.

  1. Love it! Great idea to makeover an inexpensive dollar tree wall sign into your own style. I’ve seen these large tag decorations too and it’s on my craft list. I may be doing a dollar store shopping run soon.

    1. Thanks Erlene. I love participating in the Pinterest Challenge always pushes me into a craft that I put off. Thanks for hosting the challenge each month.

    1. Awe thanks Corine. I try to keep inspiration flowing over here. You are so sweet. I am fixing to get in the kitchen and can’t wait to use my sign!

    1. Thanks Lauren. When I found the inspiration I was planning on using a piece of plywood I had, but one day while shopping at Dollar Tree I saw these tags and thought right away this would be so much easier to use and lighter than the plywood. Dollar Tree has some really neat items this season. Thanks for stopping by. Happy Holiday!

  2. I am so happy you are using my tutorial for your inspiration. These look so cute with a swag or even by itself. Thanks Kelli, wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

    1. Thank you Christina. I think the black dry brushing make it perfect….well if only I could write better. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and for pinning my DIY. Happy Holidays!

  3. Love this, Terrie!! It really takes a super creative person to see past the paint color and design of a piece and turn it into something unique!! I actually like your version versus the inspiration piece so much better!!

    1. Thank you so much Christine. I mostly look for shape when hunting for items to use. I always look past color or pattern on a piece…because you know me and the paint brush! 🙂 You are so sweet thank you! Have a wonderful holiday season my friend.
