We have been looking to replace our breakfast stools for a couple of months now, surprisingly when walking into Goodwill we found the two stools at a remarkable price. The perfect height to fit under our breakfast bar, seats that swivel and were comfortable.

The wooden stools are very solid with only superficial wear and tear.

Cushions were rough, reupholster the seats will make them as good as new.

The best part about finding these counter stools was the price.  $11.99 each!!  I checked online to see how much they run brand new, they ran close to $200 each.

Not sure what the reasoning is for the rope on the back, but I did cut them when I brought them home.

Counter Stool Makeover Project

They sat in the garage a couple days before I made the decision to paint or strip and stain the stools.  Either way, I took the stools apart.

Stripping the old stain

With much thought, we decided to strip and stain the stools.  I applied Citrus Stripper to the chairs wrapping them with saran wrap to keep the stripper from drying out.

Letting the stripper sit for an hour or so, I removed the saran wrap.  With a putty knife I scrapped off the stripper and old stain.

It took a couple reply of stripper before the chairs were stripped from the old stain.

Wiping off the stools with Mineral Spirits then sanding first with 80 grit then 220 grit sandpaper to finish the hard part of the job.

Adding stain

Combining two different stains to create the color to blend with our kitchen cabinets and table.   Both were by Minwax Wood Finish Oil-based Semi-transparent Interior Stain Special Walnut and Weathered Oak.

I applied the stain with a chip brush and then wiped off with a cloth.  I gave each piece two coats of the stain sanding between coats.

To finish off I applied two coats of Minwax Semi-gloss Polyethene, sanding between coats.

Reupholstering cushions

I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased on yard of upholstery, Archer Cloud Fabric.

The cushions on the stools had a cording I wanted to place back so I reupholstered those as well.

I am very happy with how the cushions turned out.

Finishing the stools with foot guards.  I removed them before working on the stools.

Using 120 grit sandpaper, sanded the plates.

Gave the plates and nail heads two coats of spray paint in the color Burnished Amber by Rust-oleum.

Placed them back to the bottom of both stools.

 

I finished these stools in 3 days, I love how the stools turned out. I placed our old stools on Facebook Marketplace and sold them within one hour.  Made up for the cost of both stools and supplies.  A WIN-WIN!
