RE-PURPOSED CABINET DOOR INTO A SERVING TRAY

Hey Y’all!

If you have been following me you know I love to thrift shop and I love my trays! 🙂  When you go into a Habitat For Humanity Restore you just never know what you will find.  The other day they had several unfinished cabinet doors for only $3.00 each.  I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.  I have been on the look out for one like this for awhile now.

I am going to share with you how I re-purposed a cabinet door to a great little serving tray.

Here is the items I used to make my tray!

  • cabinet door
  • two cabinet handles
  • cabinet template (I will share with you a DIY template)
  • paint or stain (or in my case both)
  • paint brush
  • paint sponge
  • Drill
  • screwdriver
  • sand paper
  • clean cloth
  • rubber gloves

Let’s get started!

I wanted to stain my door first.  I took my brush and added the stain and then wiped it off.

Let that dry.  Once it dried I gave it two coats of white chalk paint.  Sanded it lightly.

On my tray I want to add the word Welcome to the center.  Purchased a stencil from Hobby Lobby, grabbed my black chalk paint with a stencil sponge brush.

Centering my stencil using painters tape to keep it in place.

Dabbing paint to fill in the stencil.  Gently removing the stencil.

Once it dried I applied two coats of Minwax finishing paste to the tray.

I purchased my handle pulls from Hobby Lobby at 50% off.  Since I do not have a cabinet mounting template I will be sharing a DIY template.

DIY mounting template

  1. Grab your pull
  2. piece of paper and pencil
  3. draw around your handle
  4. cut the drawing out
  5. place the template on your handle attach the screws to make the holes

I used my ruler and template centering to each side of my cabinet.  Marked where to drill and drill the holes.

Secure the handles to the tray.

Any time I have a piece that I will be laying on furniture or my counter tops I like to add self-stick felt pads to the bottom.  I applied one to each corner.

That’s it.
