It’s time to paint the mantel. We finally picked out the color of the paint for the wood mantel. We decide to go with Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Powell Gray – CW-665.
Here is how I painted her mantel. Just a note: I am not a professional nor do I do this for a living. I paint as a hobby only.
I protected as much of the brick as I could so we wouldn’t get any drops of paint on the painted brick.
First Step
–Sand–
We did a light sanding with 100 grit sand paper to prep the mantel.
Second Step
–Clean well–
I used ammonia and water to clean the mantel and removed all the paint and dirt. I used 1/4 cup of ammonia to a gallon of warm water.
Third Step
–Prime–
We applied one coat of ZINSSER BULLS EYE PRIMER. Adding primer enables the paint to adhere better.
After that dries we did a light sanding.
Fourth Step
–Paint–
We gave the mantel two coats of paint with sanding between coats.
Removed the plastic.
Let that dry for 12 to 24 hours before placing anything on the painted area. She will be having her TV mounted on the wall above the mantel, until then we styled the mantel. 🙂
Looks so different! Don’t you just love a good BEFORE & AFTER?
