A SIMPLE SPRING MANTEL DIY

Hey there!  Welcome to Decorate and More with Tip.  If you are new here I am so happy you stopped by.  Please click the follow button and keep coming back, I love sharing my tips on how to decorate on a budget.  Today is another day where I share how you can decorate your home using paper.

I am joining 15 fabulous girls who are sharing how they are decorating their spaces with spring flowers. I will list all of my friend’s blog links at the bottom of my page.  It’s time for our Pinterest Inspiration Challenge hosted by Cindy, County Road 407. If you are coming over from Laura, Décor to Adore  I just love how she styles her spring flowers.  She always has so many great ways to decorate your home.  Our inspirational photo came from Deborah, Hip and Humble Style.  Deborah took pink tissue paper and a branch from her yard to make a cherry blossom branch.  You will have to go over and check her DIY out.  It was so cool.  Here is her DIY Cherry Blossom.

Deborah always inspires me with everything she does.  I am going to do something similar, but instead of cherry blossoms I am going to make tissue paper Forsythia.

You are probably thinking I am on a paper kick lately.  I shared my tutorial on how to make paper peonies (to view the tutorial DIY PAPER PEONIES) and now tissue paper forsythia.  It amazes me how pieces of paper can look a certain way by cutting and shaping.  Here is my tutorial on how I made yellow forsythia branches.

The items I used were:

  • yellow, green and brown tissue paper
  • 1 kleenex
  • brown and green floral tape
  • scissors
  • branch from your yard

Cutting the patterns

Taking the yellow tissue paper, I cut 32 petal shapes.  I cut several layers at a time by folding it several times (like a paper fan) then cut a petal shape out of the tissue.

Still using the yellow tissue paper I cut 32 thin pieces and twisted them into a toothpick shape.

Taking the green and brown tissue paper I cut 10 petal shapes out of both.

Making the flower

  1. Taking 4 yellow petals, 1 toothpick shape and the green floral tape
  2. I place two petals together, added the toothpick shape on top and two more petals
  3. Pinched together and wrap around tightly with the floral tape to hold together
  4. Cutting off any yellow parts showing.  Do this 32 times

Making the flower buds

  1. Take a green, brown or yellow petal shape
  2. Tear a piece of Kleenex and form a ball
  3. Place on top of petal and wrap around the Kleenex ball
  4. Twist the ends
  5. Wrap brown floral tape around the long part of the bud

Making the leaves

  1. Taking the green tissue paper and cut 10 leaf shapes
  2. One at a time taking the leaf pinching the bottom and wrapping green floral tape around to form a leaf

Putting the flower, buds and leaves on the branch

  1. Using the brown floral tape
  2. Wrapping the floral tape around the branch adding items one by one

Take a look at my DIY branch next to a branch I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

I disconnected my branches to place in a little polka dot vase.

Next up is Crissy, First Day of Home, she has a beautiful mantel to share with you.  I love the pitcher of flowers.  Let’s go and see what she has done.

    1. Thank you Heidi! I love a great DIY to share. They look better than some I have purchased. I hope you make you some. A little detail but so worth it!

    1. Thank you so much Zamira! You are way too kind. The branches were so fun to make, watching a piece of tissue paper turn into flowers was cool. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day!

  1. Oh my goodness, Terrie! Your mantel just makes me smile with all the spring touches! I definitely think your Forsythia looks better than the Hobby Lobby ones! I always thought making your own flowers would be so difficult but you make it look so easy I just might have to try it!

    1. Thank you Christine. I am so happy with the ones I made, not only do they look better but the flowers stay on. Unlike the Hobby Lobby ones I am constantly adding the flowers on when they fall off. Please tag me on your creations if you do end up making them, I want to see your version.

  2. Wow! Terrie, you went all out for this project… The forsythia you made are just as good (if not better) as the store-bought branches. I was thinking about the forsythia that grew in Connecticut at my mother’s and father’s last home and wishing I could cut some branches. Mom loved the big bush they had out in the front drive of their property.

Enjoy your mantel and all your pretty branches and decor; it looks lovely! <3 Happy to be with you again on this month's PC tour.

    Hugs and blessings to you,
    Barb 🙂

    1. Thank you Barbara. I love the inspirational branch but pink would not work in our home this spring so I was thinking about another flowering branch I could do. I just love how they turned out. I wish I had some growing out in our yard. The yellow really is a pretty color to have in the yard.

    1. Thank you Michelle. I think they look a lot better and are made better than the ones I purchased at Hobby Lobby. The ones I bought the flowers alwasy falls off.

    1. Thank you Julie. My blogging mission is to share ways to decorate on a budget. I make the mistakes so they don’t have too. ha! You are so sweet thank you so much for pinning it to your Pinterest to share with others.

  3. These are amazing, Terrie! They look so lifelike. I’d have to be in a pretty patient mood to sit still long enough to make them; maybe if I could be talking to a friend. Pinned, and want to try sometime!

  4. Wow, Terrie! Your forsythia branches look incredibly realistic! You did a wonderful job on those. I love how you put a different spin on the color scheme, too. It all looks so perfect with those pretty polka-dot vases and the artwork.

    1. Thanks Crissy. Although I love pink it just isn’t a color I could set with the rest of my home without changing everything out. I haven’t started my spring decorating and will be doing that when I start spring cleaning. Which I need to do soon.

    1. Thanks Katie. They do look pretty good and I think they look better than the ones I bought at the store. They tend to lose a lot of the flowers and I have to place them back on the stems. The ones I made are securely added.

  5. Oh heck no! I could never do what you do. You amaze me with your talent and how your brain works. I wouldn’t even be able to get my fingers to cooperate! Love your mantel and how cheerful it is. Great tutorial too. Thank you for joining us! Pinned

    1. I have a feeling you could do it Cindy. You short change yourself. Thank you so much for you sweet words. I know my brain works, but at times I wonder. ha!

Thanks for hosting this fun challenge.

    1. Awe! Thanks Pamela. They turned out so much better than I would of thought. Actually I like my DIY flowers than the bundle I bought from Hobby Lobby.

So happy to be hopping with you my friend!

    1. Thanks Laura. I like my DIY forsythia than the ones I bought. They fall off the branches all the time where mine are secure and look more realistic.

Always fun doing this challenge with you!

  6. Terrie,

Beautiful and fantastic tutorial. Your Forsythia turned out great and the other touches on your mantle are perfect.

    Pinned my friend

    1. Thanks Cindy! They do look so nice and will be a great piece to use it Spring and Summer. Thinking about making more since they turned out so good. 🙂
