WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 | WEEK 4 | REVEAL

This week I wanted to work on the bench area in the laundry room.  I had the plans to build a bench since I had all the material in the shed so the total project would be $0.00.  Oh how things change, I ran into the thrift store where I spotted a bench, Mr. Tip said “REALLY“?? It was the perfect size to fit in our little laundry room. I knew it looks rough but it was a solid piece. The price was a great surprise only $5.00. It was in my cart before Mr. Tip had time to say NO! Also, I found paint for $15 a gallon.  I grabbed that for the walls in our laundry room. What a day!

What do you think? Would you walk right by it?

I didn’t like the extended base because it made the bench stick out from the wall too much.  I took a circular saw and cut them evenly off on all four sides.

Next I had to strip the maroon vinyl off of the bench top.  It wasn’t that hard.  It was removing staples.  No glue, thank goodness.

It’s starting to take shape. 🙂   The screws on the bench seat were raised above the surface so I had Mr. Tip screw them down into the wood.

I filled the screw holes with wood putty.

I sanded the whole bench making sure all was nice and smooth.

I took two stain colors and stained the top part of the bench. I had the stain left over from previous projects. I used Special Walnut and Classic Gray. I applied the walnut down first and then the gray then wiped it down.   After it was dry I applied Miniwax finishing paste to seal.

I didn’t like the unfinished front underneath the seat so I took a piece of baseboard we had in the shed and cut it to size and nailed it to the front and back of my bench.

I painted the base with trim white paint.  I primed one coat and painted two coats with the white paint.

I can’t wait to style it in our laundry room.

  1. It turned out amazing, I have to say I probably would have passed on it. But WOW you can do a gorgeous transformation!

    1. Mr Tip wanted me too. ha! So happy with it now that I put my own touches on it. It is more narrow than a normal bench which works perfect for my small laundry room.

    1. Thanks Lindsey. I had all the stuff to make one and had my building mojo going on but when I saw this it was a no brainer. I had to get it and make it my own. I agree those feet/base whatever they were called had to go.

    1. With the size of our laundry room I knew that I would either have to have someone custom make a bench or make one myself, but when I found this at the thrift store it was like waiting for me. It is nice a thin it’s perfect for our space. Yes a perfect sitting place.

  2. I think I would’ve missed the potential of that bench. Great job seeing past its flaws. A great makeover. It will work very well in your space!

  3. I love it, how fun. You inspired me to do my own make over but I actually started a couple months ago on my Master bedroom. I took the month of December off so who knows when I will finish, but so much fun with having a challenge. Because I am terrible at staying withing a time limit I will post in my updates this month. I would love to also leave a link for my end of the month updates to this post of yours. You did a great job on the bench I would love to share that on my site. Keep up the great work, it is coming together so pretty.

    1. My husband always says just turn your head and don’t look. He hates when I can envision something, that means more things for projects. ha! Thanks Cindy.

    1. Thanks my friend. I really was going to make a bench but when I saw this and the price it was a no brainier it saved me time and the trouble. I love a stain and painted piece, maybe that’s why my table and hutch is like that. ha! Thanks for stopping by Christine!

  4. I love what you did with this little bench! It turned out so well! I do the same thing you did. My husband has so much scrap wood and I keep telling myself that I’m going to use it up and build something. But then I’ll see it in the thrift store and just buy it. 😀

    1. I did use one piece of scrap wood for the bench. My hubby would love for me to burn it all. ha! I love a good thrift store day. Have a great day my friend.

  5. LOVE, love, love this! I wish there were good thrift stores around me. The few good ones that we had have gotten bigger and gone WAY up in price. This was a great find and an even better makeover. Great job.

    1. Thanks Tammy. The thrift stores around here are doing the same. Slowly raising their prices. I love what you did this week on your $100 challenge.
